the pope's apology
this has not been a good week for the pope. i bet he didn't know how much his quotes would bring to the world. i'm really fascinated by how powerful one old man can be. it is interesting indeed.
at his castel gandolfo summer retreat in italy, he apologized. and he did say the words of the dude in the dark ages did not represent his views. and it is all good. but the question one asks is "then why did you quote such hateful message?"
and because of such quotes, a nun has been murdered, churches have been set on fire, folks have violently went into the streets with hatred, etc etc etc. so, he finally apologized:
*******
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The pastoral visit which I recently made to Bavaria was a deep spiritual experience, bringing together personal memories linked to places well known to me and pastoral initiatives towards an effective proclamation of the Gospel for today.
I thank God for the interior joy which he made possible, and I am also grateful to all those who worked hard for the success of this Pastoral Visit.
As is the custom, I will speak more of this during next Wednesday's general audience.
At this time, I wish also to add that I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address at the University of Regensburg, which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims.
These in fact were a quotation from a medieval text, which do not in any way express my personal thought.
Yesterday, the Cardinal Secretary of State published a statement in this regard in which he explained the true meaning of my words.
I hope that this serves to appease hearts and to clarify the true meaning of my address, which in its totality was and is an invitation to frank and sincere dialogue, with great mutual respect.

thnx, jews and muslims are united against this nazi pope, just read what this wise, sephardic chief rabbi said, http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/763593.html
similar brave words and positions should be encouraged from both sides of the fence and especially those sitting on it. Religious men, and particularly those in high visible positions and leaders of their faiths do set the tone and beliefs for many of their followers. Every word said lays in tons on the heart of their people.
Of course the Pope can say what he wants. But in the WHEN, WHERE and to WHOM he should have been more cautious. His second mistake was TIMING of his second statement clarifying that the 14th century statement did not reflect his position. He should not have waited till this Sunday Morning after the repercussions were front news and headlines around the world.

He shouldnÂ’t have added that last sentence. I donÂ’t see what kind of sincere dialogue he can hope to have with Muslims by attacking Islam and the prophet scw. He should just admit he was wrong and stop making excuses.

Waryaada, why you also milking the mistake the german dude made.
These germans are just so out of touch, I honestly would never place a german in a public post
Anyways, you are lucky cos he gave an apology unlike many of them who just choose to desapear. Your life would be easier if you saw him as a german than a pope. Plus he is more like a transitional pope. I don't think they hope to have him for as long as the last one. Everything about him smells of "temporary".

Afdhere,
I have not seen the entire text of the Pope's speech, but it is my understanding that his thesis was that violence in general, and jihad in particular, are incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. This is theology at a level I don't even pretend to understand.
What I do understand is that he was making a distinction between Islam and Catholicism that is basic to his faith.
I read in the statement the Pope's sorrow at the Islamic response to his speech, and a willingness to discuss the theological background for his argument; but I do not see an apology. I do not see that he can make one that would be acceptable to the Islamic world without denying his own faith.
Mac,
Saying that the issue is complex and that the offensive quote was taken out of context just isn't an answer. The thesis of the speech was there, with or without the quote.
Sexy,
There are lots of ignorant people on all sides of nearly all religious issues.
Nobody has a monopoly, and I like your comeback.

The Thesis of the speech was the same across the religious spectrum. The Pope discussed the excesses in ALL RELIGIONS, including Catholicism. What he said was historically fatual, but Muslims don't like to be reminded of facts they don't like. That's because they have social mores that would not pass muster in a termite mound.
