Why do they have black photos on the walls of Uni LIbraries?

I was wondering why do they have such photos on the walls of University libraries. Photos like Amiri Baraka and Rita Dove captures your sight. a rectangular shape board hangs next to every photo containing a synopsis of their history, talents like if they were poets , artists or prolific writers.

What is the Aim of having them on the walls. I enquired one of the libraries and he told me that they are to discourage others from having wrong perceptions about oppressed groups or they stand role models for black students. Laughing
