I look at the recent string of deadly school shootings, and I shed tears for the victims and curse a society infatuated with guns and violence.
Frank Lasee, a Republican Wisconsin state lawmaker, looks at the same scenes of butchery and comes to the conclusion that what we need are more guns. Lasee suggested arming teachers, principals and other school personnel as a safety measure and a deterrent.
“Go ahead Johnny make my day, one more spit ball and I will send you to that great time out in the sky.” This idea is so preposterous I’m shocked it hasn’t been summarily rejected.
The Associated Press quotes Lasee: “It might not be politically correct, but it has worked effectively in other countries. To make our schools safe for our students to learn, all options should be on the table. Israel and Thailand have well-trained teachers carrying weapons and keeping their children safe from harm. It can work in Wisconsin.”
Armed teachers makes sense in Israel, because every Israeli citizen, male and female, has to serve in the army, and consequently every Israeli knows how to use firearms. Israel also has an enormous problem with terrorists who delight in bombing night clubs, buses, and schools. In some parts of Thailand, Muslim insurgents are waging a bloody battle, and thatÂ’s why some Thai teachers carry weapons.
The answer to school violence is not to arm the principal, teachers, and custodians. I had an elementary school teacher who used to rap our knuckles with a ruler when we had the temerity to speak without raising our hands. I would hate to think what she would have done if she had been armed.
The only sane solution is to have police officers stationed in our schools. Police officers have undergone rigorous training in a police academy and they have also been psychologically screened. The only armed person I want in a school is a police officer.
