The ONLF Struggle: Justified?
The Ogaden National Liberation Front is a Somali nationalist organisation. It's perhaps ill-chosen clan name should not worry those of us who always thought the place and the people belonged to us.
But Ethiopia changed dramatically in two seismic political upheavals in the last 30 years. First through the 2000 year old Amharic Empire collapsing and being replaced by Communists and then the former Stalinist TPLF Tigreyans taking over and turning the place into a more open semi-democracy.
So why did the ONLF start the armed struggle? Should they have fought politically first? Perhaps you think they were right to launch an armed struggle because there were no other options?

There was an attempt to solve the problem politically. In 1994 ONLF and TPLF came to the table to discuss ways to come to agreement. An election was held in which the central question of OGaden being indepedent state or being part of the Ethiopian system was to be settled for once. The election took place in Jigjiga with international and domestic observers taking part. When the results came, 80 percent of 4 million population wanted 'Separate' state, which was to be member of UN General Assembly of nations.
TPLF nulled the results, declared ONLF enemy of the Ethiopian state, arrested most of the election organizers, and expelled international observers. ONLF had no choice but to re-activate its military wing.
Today Ethiopia wants to hold the Ogaden region under its sway, fully knowing the political, strategic, and economic benefits. They were shocked at losing Eritrea, they cant image losing the Ogaden. If they do half of the current landmark would be gone, and definitly Oromia and Afar would follow. They know that, so better keep Ogaden in Ethiopia. At least thats their calculations.

Justified for one reason only: the somali people under Ethiopian rule WANT to be free of this domination. I suspect those in Ethiopian pay roll want to remain under Ethiopia (the idiots in Jigjiga claiming to be the leaders of the somali region).
Maybe the ONLF should change its name in order to gain more support from non-Ogadeni clans (Gadsaans, Sheikhals, Jidwaaqs etc), but if even ONLF were to 'go away', the Xabaashi would continue to harrass and kill somali people irrespective of thier clan or sub-clan.
It seems certain, the Ethiopian gov't WILL never relinquish the somali region.

Lord Diplock,
what about seeking support from the far larger communities that settle Ogaadeeniya as well?
Why not appeal to majeerteen, Dhulbahante, Garxajis and Habar Awal?
Have u given up on them or do u believe that they dont settle in the land?

Maybe we dont need them, and I dont see ONLF hiring them anytime soon anyway.
Motto of ONLF commanders to Somaliland/Puntland/Rest of Somalia: keep your borders we keep ours, dont even thing abt doin the Somaliweyne dance, thats outdated
Phd,
If Ethiopians leave, the Dhulbhanate will take their part of Ogaadeeniya into Puntland.
Garxajis and Habar Awal will unite with Somaliland
Where does that leave u?
Mr. Cilmilla or was it CILMILLA
(as intruder, the male whoore, used to lament).
anyway, Dhulbahante is not going ANYWHERE, infact lascannod is a stones throw from the farthest ogaden village, so nope Dhulhabante is part and parcel of Ogaden state, sorry saxib, in fact ogadens Want to take lascanood and put it in Ogaden proper and also take Warsangeli lands, since these terroritories were part of the ancient dervish state, and since the bastaard white man took them away.
So where is Dhulhabante going: NOWHERE, case closed come bak tomorrow morning
as for Isaaq, well, they might as well be dead b4 they take 1-inch of Ogaden territory, im being honest, ask the average reer-isaaq who lives next to them. If ogaden becomes independent, iska daa ogaden territory, but will the districts south of burco be even safe? Ogaden seems to reclaiming all his territories before the partition.

phd,
psychologists say that gratuitous hostility and aggression usually masks nervousness and fear. This was a civilised inquiry and discussion, why did u resort to name-calling?
Or were u getting in your blows because u suspected a merciless Cilmiile onslaught?
Take it easy my friend, Cilmiilecarries a big karbaash but it is reserved for Shisheeye.
Uma baran tolkan iyo inaan bi'iyo Daaroode
Shisheeyaha markaan beratanaan badin aqaanaaye
Back to the discussion,
The Dhulbahante settle thousands of square miles south of Laascaanood. From Docmo and Bookh, south to Wardheer(where we meet the Majeerteen Cumar Maxamuud) , West to the Danood where we meet HY.
That is a huge land, contiguous to Puntland and with Biciidyahan, Cumar Maxamuud and Dhulbahante, the land from Mudug to Buuhoodle is pure Puntland and you guys are shit out of luck.
The same with the Habar Yoonis and Ciidagale, they are not lunchmeat u know?
Habar Yoonis deployed 15,000 men at Daroor when they were about to fight the Ciidagale before hostilities were quieted. How do u plan to overcome them?
That is before we even reach the Habar Awal and the other minor Isaaq tribes among them.

"psychologists say that gratuitous hostility and aggression usually masks nervousness and fear."
Yep i fear for the day when Ogaden nay-sayers they will get karbaashed.

So what? dont you see their IN Ogaden territory, shall I pinpoint that for you? you should already now this.

Yes the area in-between buhoodle and mudug is pure Putland, as far as they dont touch the current Ogaden border status quo.
"The same with the Habar Yoonis and Ciidagale, they are not lunchmeat u know?"
Lunchmeat? their deadmeat
. Again, you should already know this.
"Habar Yoonis deployed 15,000 men at Daroor when they were about to fight the Ciidagale before hostilities were quieted. How do u plan to overcome them?"
Will Soviet era tanks and helicopters stationed of Werdher military base, and theres also artillery brigade with BM rocket launchers. They better come with the best or be smashed by Ogaden tanks.
"That is before we even reach the Habar Awal and the other minor Isaaq tribes among them."
They will also be taken care of with Ogaden BM rockets and RPG's.
