Desertification is a reality in Somalia. Less than ten years ago 2/3 of Somalia was valuable grazing land and now it is all but destroyed thanks to our never ending demand for charcoal use. This below pic is a testimony to the current crises in Somalia:

Indeed, the mass cutting of trees and shrubs, including ancient acacia trees had resulted in the lost of grazing land necessary to maintain our animals and our people...
...Luckily though, governments like that of Puntland State are working on a long term political solutions to the charcoal trade. They are involved in this issue and in working on sound management of our fragile environment...
...One very important part of an overall environmental management approach that Puntland State undertook is offering alternatives to charcoal for household and businesses for their daily cooking needs.
Sun Fire Cooking in partnership with Puntland State begun about the distributing of a butterfly-design solar cooker like the one here:

...in cities like Bosaso and in towns like Bander Beyla.
Hopefully, this project will show the way forward for many places like Somalia where sun is plentiful and people rely on charcoal and wood for daily cooking.

Btw...I always thought hot water shower werenÂ’t easily excisable in places like Somalia...since every thing over there is heated by live fire, which sadly involves burning woods...
...Very difficult process I must say
But to my pleasure as it turns out many of the home in Puntland are installed with solar hot water heater like this one here:

Reer Bossasso water heater maxay ku fali qoroxdaa toban meter u jirtee.
Anyway I like what the Puntland government is doing. But when did they start cutting down trees for charcoal in Puntland? I thought that sh*t only happened in Shabellaha and other parts of Southern somalia.

Qaarxiye, you make it seem as if Bosaso is the god forsaken Sahara desert...ee ninyahow baal yadhaa daaji...
Ku yidhii, "Reer Bossasso water heater maxay ku fali qoroxdaa toban meter u jirtee."
Yes, the place is hot but unlike some places in the Middle East where it is the, my boxers are sticking to my thighs hot all the time, season's change in Bosaso so trust me those Water heater come in handy.
Anyhow this reminds me...Sheeko igu dhacaday...while I was in the Middle East...
...Well, this cousin of mine and I were driving to some relatives home and we were listening to the news recap. Just before it ended, it went through the weather. The genius on the radio then blurts out, "And it's going to be hot until 7 o'clock tomorrow". I almost crashed the car in disbelief, Walaahi...
...Are they serious? First off, it was hot ALL the freaking time there. And IÂ’m not saying 90 degree or even 102 degree hot. I'm talking about 120 degree hot. How the hell can you say it's going to be hot until a certain time. I mean that was just ridiculous...
...Luckily though, I was to depart from that god forsaken place before than to the ever faithful ever reliable Bosaso:

...Well, at the time I was taken here and it seemed as if I have reached the place...All travels to end

When I was living in Baledogle, I used to take a black, plastic, five gallon Jerry Can and fill it with water. In the morning I would put it in the sun. By early evening, I had a nice, hot shower. I do the same thing when visiting my ex- in-laws in Thailand, since they also don't have hot water out there. Works like a champ and costs nothing.
