Muqdisho, still looks beautiful, attracts investors :)

Mogadishu - Mahesh Ayra and Majdi Bashir have purchased scrap metals worth millions of dollars from a company in Mogadishu and have done so without the help of armed guards - an unusual step in one of the world's most lawless cities, now enjoying a semblance of order after 15 years of anarchy.

"We have already purchased 27 metric ton of scrap metal worth over $5-million (about R37-million)," said Bashir, an Egyptian working for Kuwait-based Dana Group Centre, which includes companies dealing with construction, real estate, food and information technology.

"We will bring in sugar and cement ... We have a lot of ideas and business plans."

Islamists, who control Mogadishu and a swathe of the south, say they have pacified the capital since ousting warlords in June. This, they say, has lured investors from as far as China.

In a country which has seen 14 attempts at effective central rule since the 1991 ouster of a dictator, foreign money is urgently needed to rebuild a devastated economy and dilapidated infrastructure.

Once Mogadishu's streets rang with the whine of bullets and echoed to the rumble of technicals - pickup trucks mounted with heavy weapons. Today, Islamist fighters quietly roam around.

"We are the first foreign investors to land in Mogadishu," said Ayra, who is Indian. "We are only waiting for security assurance to come and invest here."

The Islamists have re-opened Mogadishu's port and airport, where a "Let us build Somalia together" sign hangs high. Both had been closed for over a decade.

The Islamists have also started issuing visas.

Flights to and from Kenya and Dubai are full of curious investors and returning refugees. Passengers are sometimes forced to wait for days to get a seat on the packed planes.

Residents gaze at the aircraft as they land and take off over rusted rooftops and circle over the Indian Ocean.

Yang Jian Zhong came to Mogadishu to purchase rawhide, saying it is much cheaper in Somalia than Dubai, where he used to buy the product for his shoe factory in central China.

He was last in Mogadishu with his Chinese partner Majin Moosa in May when the Islamists were battling US- backed warlords in several months of fighting that killed hundreds.

He fled because of the violence.

"We hope to get four containers (of rawhide) ... Everything is new here, it's good for business," Moosa, said on behalf of Yang, who does not speak English.

"I hope this peace will come true for Somalia," he said, sipping local tea. "Somalia can develop into another Dubai. They have good weather, living is cheap and there are a lot of business opportunities."

Yang called on his government, which has a strong presence in Africa, to help rebuild Somalia where millions are jobless.

"I hope the Chinese government helps Somalia. Somalia can develop if peace comes. People can do a lot."

Somalia has an interim government, based in the provincial town of Baidoa, but the rise of the Islamists has challenged its authority and effectively flanked the Western-backed administration on three sides.

Peace talks between the two sides have taken place in Sudan, and as a fragile calm takes hold, residents hope business opportunities will flourish.

"There is peace but there is no money," taxi driver Yusuf Ali said while driving on a potholed Mogadishu street.

"It is becoming very hard to feed our children. We desperately need big companies to come and help restore our badly damaged roads."

Bashir says Mogadishu residents had a huge appetite for work after years of fighting. He said some women and men had begun cleaning streets and clearing roads on their own initiative.

"It is a sign that people are ready to work, they need money to survive ... We are ready to provide them with jobs they need."

He said his company was willing to teach Somalis other things. "We are even ready to start classes for the people here and teach them how important peace is."

Violence has not disappeared - a Swedish journalist and an Italian nun were shot dead in Mogadishu since the Islamist takeover - but Bashir and Ayra said they were not scared.

"We look forward towards conducting healthy and fruitful business in Somalia," Bashir said.

Ayra said they would return with colleagues, such as doctors and engineers.

"Road infrastructure and the health care sector are the priority areas that need urgent funding," Ayra said.

"Our partners will soon come to see for themselves ... opportunities are abundant here."

Wooooww!!!! Masha-Allah That is amazing ................... with such a short period of time they have achieved the impossible. This is a huge blow for Sacad and Faqash who were praying for the downfall of the Wadaado.

Great news, thanks Gama for sharing. I definetely have to start packing by bags

Luggooyo,

Sacad is part of the movement with the exception of Warlord Qeybdiid and his handful supporters like Abdiwahab here. The courts never attacked any warlord without ensuring his clansmen were part of the campaign and Sacads led by Cagaweyne participtated in the eviction of Warlord Qeybdiid.

This movement has all somalis as members as far as Hargeysa and doesn't belong to any particular clan. The leaders are Abgaal and Ceyr respectively but definitely the movement is for all. Meesha wax qabiil la dhaho ma jiraan saaxib. Membership is open for all who care about Somalia.

Gamadiid: Inadeer, when u put on the Red Cimamaad, u gave up your allegiance to your kin & clan.

Based on your logic, the TFG's attack on the UIC would be a QARAN one if there are 2 Hawiyes in a group of 1,000 nonHawiyes.....

Abdiwahab

Of course, I never had an allegiance to a clan and will never have. That is why I don't have an issue which prevents me from supporting the courts. Unlike clan minded somalis who look at the clan of the person before they judge someone on their merits, I am for the courts who brought the changes we needed in Muqdisho. Their achievements include:

A- Uniting the clans in Muqdisho under islam. No more reer Hebel wars in that town.

B- Inviting all other somali clans to join them in the war against the murderers and ruthless, clanless, faithless warlords like Qeybdiid, Yalaxoow, Qanyare, Dheere, Raage and etc.

C- Returning the looted properties to people.

D- Reforming the mooryaan kids who grew up with the gun as a rule of law.

Just to mention few of their successes.

As for the TFG, it is an organization based on clan power sharing, a concept as useless as its leaders from top down. The TFG stands for what destroyed the country, CLAN, therefore, any somali tired and sick of Reer Hebel shall welcome the change the courts has brought, POLITICAL ISLAM, what you earn is what you work for including ruling Somalia.

PS: I am still Sacad Reer Jalaf Nonetheless Laughing Viva the courts.

Take bro Abdiwahab and lay off the useless clan bigotry. The people in muqdisho are yours and they surely love the new life injected into the town. I don't understand why you care that dawaco looking Qeybdiid.

Qanyare was a lot smarter than him by handing the weapons to the courts to save his Murursade clansmen from the courts. On the other hand, Qyebdid like a typical mooryaan insisted on fighting killing the kids in the process he should have protected. Atto is a smart warlord too. Sounds like you support the most lowlt among the lowlies.

Gamadid: Caato is a p.ussy. He is become a lackey kicked by AfBiijo and now under Dahir Aweys.

Your points on the UIC's accomplishments are valid but the question is at what price ? Anyone with a strong force can bring order but can they have staying power ?

Thats the $1 million dollar question.

I am sure u heard of the 4 Sacad elders butchered by your UIC (Saleeman Franchise) in Galgaduud.

The UIC Army is ready to invade our holy land of Sacad. So if Qeybdiid left Xamar to them, why are the UIC trying to capture our land ?

This UIC fantasia will end some time. The question which remains is what to do with the lackeys & dhabo dilif ? Caagoweyne, Caddow, Bacadle, Cali Tooyo are all on the list.

Abdiwahab, The courts have staying power as long as they care about the people unlike their warlord predecessors. Atto is smart for understanding his past failures and for moving on. He has done a good job by not foolishly leading a losing war against the courts. The courts have no loyalty to clan and he knew he would be expelled or captured and killed had he fought them, so he gave up his big guns and admitted on bbc saying : "I handed my weapons to the courts because if others have a better idea and work for a better cause, you let them do their work".

On the other hand, Qeybdiid didn't understand the seriousness of reer Muqdisho and thought he could fight with 200 hundreds kids he used to drug. This low life will never come back in Xamar.

As for the Sacad Elders killed by Some Saleebaan members, The same had been done by Sacad members and almost ten if not more Saleebaan Elders were killed who came for Peace as well a year or so back. I am not justifying the killing of elders, however, this and the other killings were acts committed by irresponsible members of the respective clans, this is nothing new as clans who settle in Mudug had been killing each other for ages. Life will go on and peace will prevail eventually.

Xamar is going to look even better than before in no time. Some people have been rebuilding their homes over the past few years and the rebuilding work is moving a lot faster now as the city attracts new investors. My uncle who recently went there was very impressed about the developments and security. Hopefully there will be lasting peace which would mean increased investment. Smile Cool
