WHEN THE HAWIYE HIJACK THE BBC
Below is an email I sent to my dear Brother Yacub, whom I am little bit acquainted with. He recently wrote a very interesting article on Some Somali sites.
http://www.wardheernews.com/Articles_06 ... Yacub.html
I decided to congratulate him and write this jest email to at least poke fun at his recent foolhardiness.
Dear Jama Yacub,
First, let me congratulate you for your interesting article: The BBC Reputation and the British Tax Payers Money Become Means to Promote and Convey Islamist Radicals Agenda.” I just read it on this site.
I am little bit dumbfounded and lost here. What was your point? Are you saying the BBC is hijacked by one Somali clan? And these people should be expelled by the authorities responsible to manage BBC? Are you saying that the BBC is giving some airtime to a group of Islamists who are determined to wreak havoc in Somalia, who oppose your uncle-president and who probably are training “terrorists” who might eventually become “suicide bombers” and destroy the BBC? You said these Islamists have already done that. They have lynched BBC Journalists before, so it would be a piece of cake for the Islamists in Mogadishu to repeat the same actions.
I don't listen to BBC Somali section. As a young kid, I used to see Somalis congregating in small short-wave radios every evening before Maghreb prayers. I haven't listened to BBC for more than 15 years. But I started listening to it because my grandmother. It is her source of world news. She doesnÂ’t speak any other language. And thanks to her devout listening to the BBC, I also became a devout listener. I listened the programs you mentioned specially the long discussion and questioning session Mogadishu students had with the chief of the Islamists. They sounded very articulate, very patriotic and especially the sisters seemed very practical and objective. Their worries included the Ethiopian incursion and invasion of their homeland. I know how familiar you are with talk-show radios in San Diego where people, pundits, students discuss immigration and border issues. San Diego has a lot of migrant workers from Mexico who legally or illegally crossed the border.
Imagine, what these talk-show radios would have discussed if Mexican army forces invaded California. You would have seen San Diego College students asking the same questions to Arnold Schwarzenegger. IsnÂ’t he the chief of California? The governor of your state speaks with accented English. He too was a legal alien and immigrant. Let me ask you brother, can Puntland or Somaliland have a Maay speaking governor? or one of those funny accented Hawiye from the south as governors? I donÂ’t think so because the governor of these regions must be from the native clans. Right?
Anyways, let me not digress here and let me come back to the article you wrote so well. I don't understand the logic of your argument but I think the gist of it is that you are unhappy with the Islamic Courts and their sudden control in Somalia and the fact that some of the BBC newscasters happen to be from Mogadishu and thus belong to the Hawiye clan. These two ideas come out of your article, I guess. I could be wrong but you have to understand people perceive things differently.
Your article also tells me you are not Hawiye and you are unhappy to see Hawiye working in such an important news media as the BBC. Well, let me ask you, how many Isaaqs and how many Daaroods and how many Digil & Mirifle work in the Somali BBC section? Wait a second; last time I checked, Somali Maxaa Tiri was the language of broadcast in the BBCÂ’s Somali section. Don't you think we need a Mai Somali BBC? It is about a time right since our president, your uncle is seated in Baida where most people speak the Maay dialect. Did he learn it? Or still he has the same funny Mudugh accent? if that is the case, he shouldnÂ’t be there. He should move to Gaalkacyo or Garoowe. See, When I came here, I had to learn English or move back to Somalia. To work and make a living here, you need to learn English. There are many Hispanic immigrants who are mostly my neighbors. Guess what? I learned Spanish and I chitchat with them on daily basis. Can you uncle-president, Abdullahi Yusuf do the same?
I always digress. Sorry. Back to the beginning, you have beef with the Hawiye guy who is in charge of the BBC Somali section and his other Hawiye friends? It would have been nice to see some broadcasters from mai-speaking regions. But I am sure they would have not all be Digil & Mirifle. I know so many maay speaking Hawiye, Daarood and Isaaq Somalis in my areas. That shouldnÂ’t be a surprise to you. right?
Anyways, to make you happy, I would petition to the Somali BBC to expel all these Hawiye broadcasters and replace with them some non-hawiye Somalis or better some Daarood or Majeerteen newscasters who will give ample time and many slots to his excellency, our president, your uncle Mr.Abdullahi Yusuf. As you know, he is our president and we should all praise him, obey him, revere him and shower him with poetic accolades. He is our president and like every other African president, he should become our father, I mean the father of the nation, who will then follow the footsteps of our late great president Jaalle Mohamed Siyaad Barre.
I think the Somali BBC section is mocking our Somali sensibilities by employing such reactionary forces as the Hawiye broadcasters you listed in your article. They have shown how pro-terrorist, pro-islamists they are. And we should ask her Excellency Queen Elizabeth to do something about it. The British people whose tax money is funded with BBC, should not bankroll Islamists in Mogadishu or their pro-western Agenda or employ Yusuf Garaad. He is Hawiye. The British should not promote the “radical Islamist agenda of the Hawiye”! These Hawiye are hell-bent and destroyed our nation. We, have better alternatives. I mean we, the supporters of our great President, Mr. Abdullahi Yusuf have a better options. We know how to run a country. We are pro-west. We are committed secularists and may I add we know how to lead a country into division, corruption, and nepotism because we learned from our colonial masters. Our region, Mudugh and Puntland had produced great leaders such as our current President, Mr.Abdullahi Yusuf, our late president Mr. Abdiriashid Ali Sharmake, may Allah bless his soul, our Prime Minister, Mr. Abdirizak Haji Hussein, and many other important leaders. They were all students of our Italian colonial masters in the 50’s. They were good clerks and servants. As we got our independence, the Italian trained clerks and servants transformed themselves into leaders, government officials and so on. Few were Hawiye’s then. Most of them were Islamic Sufis back then, but now the Hawiye are not Sufis anymore. Some of them, worked hard, got educated, and took over everything. It is unacceptable and it is a threat to our great dominance and insult to our glorious past.
Brother Yacub, donÂ’t think I am mocking you here. I know you and sit with you in that famous starbucks. plus I am just repeating what I have been told of the Somali mentality. We are people who are full of pride. We know who is who. We know our lineage. We value and care about our clansmen. The clan animosity is so deep-rooted and is to the point where we donÂ’t care an individualÂ’s qualifications, skills and competence any more. How Yusuf Garaad became the chief editor and how these Hawiye got into the job? I am really surprised the accomplishments of these Somalis. But it would have been better if Somalis were astronauts, or known scientific researchers and geniuses like Einsten or won Nobel Prize. I did a google search and guess what? I found some of them were nominated like our great novelist Nurridin Farah but he is Ogaden, a Daarood, not Hawiye. I have also come across this lady Asha Elmi who is also one of the thousand women global women activists and peace makers nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. I think she is Hawiye but married to Daarood guy. Somali women who marry across clan-lines will automatically covert to her husbandÂ’s clan. So practically, the peace-lady is Daarood. So are Ayaan Hirsi, the famous Female Salman Rushdie, Iman, Waris and many great Somali women. I donÂ’t think any of these beautiful ladies would support Hawiye Islamists who force women to wear tents and cloaks and veils that hide their beautiful faces and bossoms.
I am saying all of these because the first thing we want to know about a Somali is, what clan he or she hails from. I didnÂ’t know Yusuf Garaad was Hawiye. I know Rageh Omaar is Isaaq. I donÂ’t know the other journalists you mentioned in your article. But If they are from Mogadishu, then they must be Hawiye and pro-islamic? Right?
You are a Somali brother, living in San Diego. I love San Diego. We know it has a good weather, great beach, downtown life and above all good schools. You seem educated. But still you are caught in the Somali trap of clannish animosity and loathing as I can tell of your active advocacy against the Hawiye influence in BBC. It forced you to sit down, write an article, come up with an amazing title and make all the efforts to disseminate it through all these Somali sites. Good Job. I am also assuming you sent a copy to the BBC directors, to Tony Blair, to her Excellency, the Queen. By the way, have you seen the movie about the Queen? It is a good movie to see. It will help you understand how the Queen thinks, reacts to news and so on.
I am sure you also planning to write to many British newspapers, if you have not done it already. Just imagine how the British public opinion will react when they read your article when they see it on Guardian, or the Daily Sun or the Independent, or the Mirror. It will infuriate them and there will be uproar and protests everywhere. Down with Yusuf Garaad, down with the Hawiye, down with the Islamists in Mogadishu!
The British, after reading your insightful article, will demand the expulsion and firing of all these Hawiye journalists and in their place to be replaced with non-Hawiye, non-Islamist, maybe close relatives of our great President, Mr. Abdullahi Yusuf, whose kidney is probably British, who comes and visits London every year for a medical checkup. We know Somalia, as a poor African country, doesnÂ’t have good doctors, good hospitals, and good medical facilities. We know the people there are still very backward and undeveloped.
However, we know the Somali elite are dispersed all over the world as refugees and immigrants. They fled the country because of the horrific civil war that ensued clans against clans, sub-clans against sub-clans. The lucky Somalis who know claim homes in places like San Diego like you, have mastered to learn English, go to schools, become cab drivers, factory workers and even clannish pundits. The lucky Somalis in the Diaspora mastered to still perpetuate the same unhelpful clannish guiding principles of their past or current leaders, the same clannish mentality that destroyed Somalia as a nation and that is why know there are hundreds of Somali sites and Somali pundits like me and you who engage in clannish politics and rivalry.
What a progress! Let us keep up with this tit-for-tat, me against my brother, my clan against yours, etc mentality. It is amazing with what we became. A society blinded by clannish hatred. Our whole appraisal of things, issues, facts, and matters is based on tribalism and all of its ills and goods.
Good Job! Bro Yacub. Your article was inspiring and eye-opening to say the least and keep up with the positive work of clannish bigotry, anti-Islamism, and advocacy and cheerleading for your uncle president.
One day, your dream of seeing your immediate clan dominate other clans of Somalia and accordingly became the de-facto leaders or better the royal family of Somalia will come true. You will also be rewarded for your current laudable active role and you will become the minister of information, and then you wonÂ’t need BBC Radio because you will have your own Radio where no Hawiye will work. Ask your cousin Omar Jamal of Minnesota, rumors have it he is being groomed to become our ambassador or counsel in Washington, D. C. Maybe you too could forfeit the ministry of information post uncle Yusuf is going to reward you and maybe choose to remain in California and become the Somali counsel general of Los Angeles.
Anyways, as you get my drift, this was about a mockery and it was meant to ridicule you and other clannish pundits around San Diego and other distant lands. np pun intended, so donÂ’t take it personal. It was for the heck of it.
Somalis, have to learn to respect the freedom of expression and the free media. We also have to learn not to look things into the clannish lens. When you look everything through the tribal prospective, it impairs your God-given intellect. I hope I don't come across a preacher. Take care bro Yacub and see you at the Starbucks for heated conversation about this and the tall latte` is on me.
