The Messenger of Allah (pbh) once said, "Every morning when man wakes up, all the organs of the body plead with the tongue. They say fear Allah in us, for we are as you are, if you are straight then we are straight and if you are bent then we are bent." Narrated by Imam Muslim.
Every morning when we wake up we have two choices, either we can sell our world for our hereafter and secure our places in Jannah, OR we can sell our souls to the devil. Our organs contribute greatly towards this because every part of the body is cabable of committing deliberate sins. However there is one organ that we pay scant attention to and this is the tongue. The tongue is an amazing piece of flesh, so small and hidden, yet this one tongue alone can easily make or break our hereafter.
The Prohphet (peace be upon him) said "A persons body can never be pure until the heart is pure and the heart can never be pure until the tongue is pure" Narrated by Anas bin Malik.
It is quite amazing how we have the willpower to abstain from so many things that are haram, yet when it comes to the tongue we tend to be very careless and we just let it loose to do as it pleases. People in general have a habit of talking alot, which leads us towards committing many sins relating to the tongue alone. This is because when we talk alot we may joke, we may speak in offensive tones and more likely than not we end up gossiping and backbiting.
My dear brothers and sisters, the tongue is a very destructive instrument and we have to learn to control it before it controls us, at times this tongue alone can be responsible for our eternal destruction or success in the hereafter.
The Messenger (peace be upon him) said "The servant of Allah, at times utters one word of the pleasure of Allah to which he attaches no importance to and to which he gives no significance, but for that one word alone Allah raises him many grades. At times he may utter one word of the anger and displeasure of Allah to which he pays no attention and attaches no importance, but for that one word alone he falls into the hell fire" Narrated by Imam Muslim.
We should realise that it is the tongue that controls us when we start to backbite without even thinking about it This is a very dangerous situation and we may not mean any harm by the things we say but if we carry on along this path we will surely be of the losers. When confronted about our backbiting we may say "surely I am not backbiting because if X person were here I would say the same thing to them". We need to understand what backbiting really is so that we can avoid it in the future.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Backbiting is your mentioning something in their abence that they would hate."
As we can see fromt his hadith, it does not matter if we have the courage to say something to a person in their presence or not because the moment we mention something about them in their absence that they would hate, we back-bit.
The Messenger (pbh) then continued to say "If what you have said about this person in their absence is true then you have back-bit, but if what you have said is not true then you have slandered them" Narrated by Maalik ibn Mubarak and Imam Muslim.
We then have to ask ourselves what the consequences of such actions are?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said "On the day of Judgement, a man of my ummah will come with the rewards of Salah and the rewards of Fasting. He will come with the rewards of Zakat and with the rewards of many good deeds, but this man will come in such a way and in such a state that during his lifetime he would have verbally abused a person and he would have slandered another person. So Allah will judge between them and each of his victims who has been wronged will be given from his good deeds as compensation for their suffering. If his good deeds expire before he is able to pay that which is due on him, then their sins will be taken from them and placed upon his shoulders and he will be thrown into the hell fire." Narrated by Imam Muslim.
We should literally fear our tongues because they can take us to destructive places of which there is no return, we need to think before we speak. There is an old Arab saying that comes to mind " A fools heart is on the tip of his tongue and a wise mans tongue is in his heart" It is something we need to think about.
Time is so precious and our main aim in this dunya is to collect as many rewar points as possible to secure our places in the Jannah. The Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was once quoted to have said "Life is a bridge, do not dwell on building on this bridge lest it breaks, your task is to try to get to the other side" Quoted from a lecture given by Khalid Yasen.
Let us look at how to make that change, how can we refrain from the evils of the tongue. First and foremost we need to look at the company we keep because our friends have a great influence on our personalities, so if our friends are the sort who like to gossip and backbite then surely we too will get into that habit.
