Tuug gabay xad ah inaad tahay ma ogeyn. Come clean now and credit the ovesick Cagdheer Gabyaa that recited this superb piece.
And foolka it is great to see some of us are still keeping the most basic ingredients of Somaliness like Gabay in memory.
The Great Xplaya, the awful Cilmiile and you are true national treasures.

The Great Xplaya, the awful Cilmiile and you are true national treasures.
Maxamed Nuur Fadal was a Habar Jeclo , he was the poet of the anti-poll tax.
Nin naftiisa biime u geshiyo bohol xun mooyaane
Bawdada nimay kaga dhacdiyo boqonta mooyaane
Gobannimo bilaash looma helo ban iska taaltaale
Markuu gaalku buugiis ku dhigay sedki biddood qaata
Maxamed Nuur Fadal died in Kenya and is burried in the oldest somali section of Neyrobi. Alhtough most of his adult and late life he was a man wearing a suit and a tie and spoke English , yet when it came to somali potery and the life of the nomads he beat the best of camell piss smelling Cagdheer.
Muuse Galaal, Aw Jaamac Cabdi Ciise , Maxamuud Daallin the expert in somali poetry once had a discussion of which of all somali poets described best the male camell in rut during the mating season. Naturally the Kuumbus championed one of them an Ogaadeen by the name of Cabeeye out of sheer clanism , Cabeeye describing a male camell in rut said:
1-Marku baarqabkeedii nirgaa badan kaxaynaayay
2-Ee doobta sida buunka iyo ridayay baaruuda
3-Oo micida sidii baali jaban balaw ka siinaayay
4-Barbar heega laafyaha marku kor ula boodayaay
5-Dhegta baarrinteed iyo tawaad, labada baal qoysey
6-Bushimaha hortoodiyo afkuu, buladku laallaado
7-Oo dhibida beerka iyo kalyaa bay iskaga yeelay
8-Boggoo xoodmay bay soo baxdaa burunjidiisiiye.
Maxamed Nuur Fadal in his turn said:
1. Waa lagu dhintaa geel ninkii dhaqo yiidhaahdawe
2. Waa dheeman iyo luul ku jira dhib iyo laystaane
3. Dhayal iyo ciyaar looma helo dhug iyo aar laaye
4. Iyadoo Dhamaysay fadhida dhagaxa guudkiisa
5. Iyadoo dhimbiilaha sare iyo Hawdka kor u dhaaftay
6. Iyadoo xeeryaha looga dhigay qaydka dhiniciisa
7. Iyadoo markaa wada dhashood dhaan la furay moodo
8. Dhufaankeeda iyo aarnaka oo dharabka loolaaya
9. Iyadoo baruur dhaabantay oo kurusku dheeraaday
10. Marku dhalmo kibirkii durduro dhagac ka soo siiyay
11. Ogaadeen intuu dhacay ee u dhaanto daba qaaday
12. oo baarqabkii nirgaha dhalay dhaafi kari waayay
13. Oo dhinac ka eega iyo kalgacal dhuunta ka higooday
14. Dhal jacayl daraadi kolku dhuunta galinaayay
15. Oo micida dhumacsatiyo dhoosha ka ciisiyay
16. Oo doobta lama dhawrsadee galawga dhiileeyay
17. Oo dhibida labadiisa qaar dhiinmay midabkiisu
18. Dhagtoo loo sargooyiyo Dawaad dhuxul la moodaayay
19. Goortu dhareerka iyo xumbada mariyay dheegiisa
20. Isagoo dhinbill raydab iyo dhuuga sare moodo
21. Dhan-u-heegga laafyaha marku dhebel u qaadaayay
22. Dhirifka iyo cadhadii kolku dhiraha laynaayay
23. Oo dhibida dheega iyo kalyaha dhiig iskaga yeelay
24. Waa dhidibka geelee marku dhudi shaxeexaayay
The Kuumbuus later had to admit that Maxamed Nuur Fadal described the beauty of the male camell in rut during the Gu season alot better in 11 lines then their Ogaadeen poet. The difference is Maxamed Nuur Fadal recited his poem in Kenya in 1929 during the heat of the Poll Tax wearing a suit while the Ogaadeen never in his life seen the sea of Berbera never mind the rest of the world..
and thats the mircale of Isaaq, they can be in Siberia and yet beat the Kuumbu in his own backyard.

I am in awe of your knowledge of Somali literature.
You know not only Great Gabyaas like Yawle and Habeel and Ina Abdille and Salan and Qaman but also `mid-ranks' like Fadal and Mire and many others. Great to see this. And may I congratulate you for walking all over Cilmiile in his attempt to manufacture a Dhulos victory over HY that never happened.

Galol,
I would not call Maxamed Nuur Fadal a mid size , Yawle began his first poetry during the assasination of Adan Gibb in 1923 , by then Cali Jaamac Haabiil was dead some 20 years, Cali Jaamac Haabiil died in 1906. Yawle was less then 50 when he was killed in 1953 during the H.J Vs H.Y war.
Maxamed Nuur Fadal was Saalax Laydiray contemproray, the reason you won't hear his poetry among somali poets was because he spent almost 40 years in east africa. Saalax Laydiray (1862-1933) had more poetry composed then the Mullah's entire Diwaan, he began composing at young age around 13 in late 1800's. When the Mullah composed his oral fart:
Idoor wagaashle iyo kufriga wacda alaa u yaale.
Saalax Laydiray in a long forgotten poem intentionaly by the Kuumbo "kacaan" said in replay:
Wad isaaq inaan ahay waa wehel la'aaneede
oo Maalintaad rag is wadhaan wagara siinkiiye
Wejigii ustaadka ahaa walantay naartiiye
Wax xun baad fartaan khaliqiga weeraroo dhaca'e
Wacdina qaadan maysaan sidaad mar u wareerteene
Again the Mullah after the camell wrestling incident of Dhul Madoobe (which has nothing to do with fighting Gaalo at all, after stealing some reer Caynaashe herd). The Mullah sought a pretext for his theift and said:
Naagaad u tihiin Ferenjigii noloshka dheeraaye
Nasab hadaad tihiin gaaladaad nici lahaydeene.
These are 2 lines the Kuumubos love to repeat , but in actuality the entire poems was only about camel theift, few dare to finish the rest of it:
Geelaan naawilay ee sida naq u eegaayo
Aaan naallada u diray markad bogox ka naw siiseen
Oon naayiray markay noobir soo hoyatay
Aniguba waxbadan baad nuur li igu nadiirteene
Waxbadn baad nijaas iyo darxumo igu nariirteene
Naa naa weeye maantaad wanaag iga niyeyseene.
The Kuumbu historians would never dare to mention the other side of the story, it will blow up the fantasy, the entire incident was about camels, it has nothing todo with fighting the "gaalo' as they like the somalis to beleive. Muuse Galaal in his part unlike Aw Jaamac Cabdi Ciise the author of the Diiwaanka Daraawiishta the father of modern Candhoole myth . mentioned both Saalax laydiray's respond in complete, but the problem is he was chanting it and few lines can be grasbed from the long poem : i manged to copy these lines from one of his 1971 tapes.
Saalax Laydiray
Nasli gabay haduu leeyahayoo naafa laga dhowro
Naqwihiisa anaa layga bartayiyo, nafu leeyahaye
Naahnaah waqay ma tirsho neysiigaa darane
noocisu wuxu gaadhayaa, nugubka feedhaaye
Anse kaygu nadarka ka daran naaihiguu yahaye
Nafle la calaacalk iyo naago ku hanuunka
niyadeedu waxay saaranyihiin nuqursigaagiye
Nuxnuxda iyo naxalig beenaiyo maqalka shaydaanka
Nimiimuhu warku keenay buu nacab ku raacye
Anna nadar waxan u arkaan nacam yidhaahdaaye
Abidkeedba isumay sinayn naaqusnimo iyo nasab'e
Saalax Laydiray, Maxamed Nuur Fadal, salaan, Qawdhan, Faarax Nuur, are in the same legue, Yawle , Cabdi Gahayr, Cali Dhuux , Samtar Baxnaan who only died in 1984 still fighting for their second Mohamed is also in that category. Ali Dhuux is a mere rascal his father's nickname "Goroyo" ostrich attest to his bravery and speed during the battle.

Oh make no mistake; the Ina Abdille Xasan movement was simply a Kombo attack this time using God to defeat Isaqs. Of that there is no doubt despite the `History'written by the British milatary officers who afterall wanted the club talking point of fighting a `formidable nationalist foe'. There is no glory in fighting and defeating a local clan warrior.
I am sorry to say I never heard of Saalax Laydiray. Means nothing though I dont know a lot of Gabyaa.
