Somali regions in Kenya and Ethiopia should be part of Somalia, says Somali Islamic leader
The Associated PressPublished: November 18, 2006
MOGADISHU, Somalia: Somalia's Islamic leader wants the Somali regions of Kenya and Ethiopia to be part of Somalia, he said in a radio interview, reviving the idea of a "Greater Somalia," which caused tensions in the 1970s and was a cause of the war with Ethiopia.
Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, chairman of the Council of Islamic Courts, told Shabelle Radio in a live call-in interview late Friday that his group will work to unite Somali peoples, but he did not say how they proposed to achieve what he referred to as "Greater Somalia."
This is the first time that Aweys has spoken about expanding the influence of the Islamic courts outside Somalia since his group seized control of the capital, Mogadishu, in June and has since been consolidating its control of most of southern Somalia.
"We will leave no stone unturned to integrate our Somali brothers in Kenya and Ethiopia and restore their freedom to live with their ancestors in Somalia," he said.

I do not know about the people in Zone-5 but the somalis in Kenya are happy being Kenyan citizens as far as I know. Could someone tell me how they would benefit being part of Somalia? I used to be for greater Somalia back in the day but right now, after speaking many sijuis from all over kenya, I realize that somalis in kenya simply do not want to be part of Somalia and no person in Mogdishu or Bossasso should decide what country they should be part of.
The same nutcase from AP strikes again lol
Sheikh Xassan made his opinions and vision very clear in his first speech and consequent interviews he gave with regards to greater Somalia. The point he makes is very simple. Treat the Somali people of those regions as equal & important citizens or let them decide whether or not they want to be part of greater Somalia. He has never stated that he wants to forcefully reconstruct the vision of greater Somalia. He is a military man and a muslim leader and is working for the benefit of the Somali people. Like he said before, the future of the Somali people of Kenya and Ethiopia should be decided by those people. Obviously the Somali Ethiopians would prefer to be either an independent state or part of greater Somalia. Therefore the Abyssinian colonialists should give the Somalis their right to self-determination.
There is no point in contemplating about all this when Somalia is facing a looming crisis. We should be concerned about the whole of Somalia being under the foot of Ethiopia and Kenya. At the end of the day, the most important thing for Somalia and Somalis is to develop their lands and standard of living while maintaining their rights and freedom. We shouldnÂ’t care about what Kenyans and Ethiopians want much less other far off countries in the West. The sooner Somalis realise the reality on the ground and putting the interests of Somalia and Somalis first the better.
So why not discuss something about the Yemani and Ethiopian weapons and the Ugandan and Tigrean soldiers being gathered for the puppets in Baidoa? DonÂ’t bother with the idiot that writes for the AP.

Dahir aweys, needs to be aware that the world wasn't build within a day, He's walking before he can crawl, He's already starting off on the wrong foot, some of his demands, like banning khaat, and other manor dilemma's should be delayed for the moment being, until the country has formed some sort of government structure, He should unite the country before engaging in a combat, Somali is on thin ice at the moment, A war with Ethiopia could be fatal to Somalia. He should reconsider his tactics, before it's too late.
