They should have warned them first since those Muslims might have been commiting these acts in ignorance. Only if they persisted, the action would have been justified.

Mad Mac, that statement reveals your apparent ignorance of the Islamic jurisprudence. Those who were warned of performing these heretical acts and disregarded these warnings are to be punished and there are various degrees of punishment whilst some are taczir (discretionary) punishments and others are fixed punishments (Hudd). Shirk comes under the heading of the established punishment for apostasy whilst misdeamonor punishments (taczir) are left to the discretion of Qadi (judge).
