I just watched Al Gore's new documentary about global warming entitled "An Inconvenient Truth"

No wonder Al Gore lost in 2000, America is not ready for someone with his intellect or his interests!

You're probably right. But also keep in mind that it's BECAUSE he's no longer in politics that he's able to air his views without concern for his political career (like he did that SNL skit ). Had he won the presidency, perhaps he would've had to compromise and obfuscate and generally play a different tune.

Remember in the mid 70s, when global cooling was the issue and the time to act was then? According to the predecessors of Al Gore, the Global Cooling was also caused by.............CO2 being discharged into the atmosphere. According to popular science and a number of other publications, the cooling trend had already killed hundreds of thousands of people in poorer countries (I am not making this up) and would kill millions in the future if the trend was not reversed. And low and behold now it's global warming, and the time to act is NOW.

This theory gained temporary popular attention due to press reporting following a better understanding of ice age cycles and a temporary downward trend of temperatures from the 1940s to the early 1970s. The theory never had strong scientific support. At present, the Earth is not cooling, but rather is in a period of global warming mostly attributed to human activity."
