I have the documentary by Mark Bowden and it's pretty good. Much more accurated than the infamous movie by Ridley Scott.

Yeah, Abdiwahab. The first time I saw the movie I went to the cinema with a Somali friend. "What the hell are they saying?", she asked me when the Somalis were "talking". "I can't understand a shit of what they're saying".

Later, I knew that Mo'Alim is a British actor who never was in Somalia. The only guy who looks like a Somali is the taxi driver (although I don't know if he's really a Somali).

I really missed some point of view, small, short, whatever, from the Somali side. The only parlament of a Somali is Firimbi talking about the "American democracy" and Atto smoking his Cuban cigar. As far as I know, and Mad Mac could confirm this, Firimbi treated really well Michael Durant during the time he was taken as a POW.

My friend Joe Strummer, who composed the music for the final credits of BHD, was really upset with the movie. Ridley Scott had told him that it was going to be a well balanced movie about the cruelty of war. He felt he had been fooled.

Ridley Scott should have just told the story as it was. I hate these movie dickweeds who think they are artists or want to give a "lesson" in their films, like we are school children. Just show what really happened and we can draw our own conclusion. Focking Hollywood.

MAD... Actually Hollywood makes the US powerful: exports US culture all over the world.

If the USSR had such a vibrant Hollywood like industry, then who knows

Abdi
The US entertainment industry, not just Hollywood, is certainly all pervasive. I do not agree that it makes the US "powerful" anymore than Bollywood makes India powerful. The success of Hollywood is the inevitable consequence of a free society in which freedom of expression is not constrained AND the financial werewithal exists (again, in a free market society) to permit the realization of the creativity. The problem I have with Hollywood is when they make films "based on true stories" and then change the story.

Like the movie "Hurricaine". Ruben, "Hurricaine" Carter was not a great fighter. He had some talent, but he tended toward the undisciplined. Unlike in the movie, Joey Giardello cleanly beat Carter, using a lot of head movement and a rapier jab. Carter threw hard punches, but couldn't land cleanly enough or often enough.

Carters next big fight was against ceeb Tiger - who dropped him three times en route to a ten round decision.

After that, Carter became a jouneyman fighter, winning some and losing some. Although he was a hard puncher, who could knock out a guy if he caught him clean, he was not the wrecking machine he was painted as being.

Although Carter was probably not involved in the murders in question, he had a criminal record a mile long, and was certainly not the meek and mild intellectual who avoided trouble where he could as portrayed in the film. Carter has mellowed with age, and the real stroy is every bit as dramatic as the one portrayed, but in a different way. His real life story, in my view, would have made just as compelling a film. Lastly, the Canadian family involved in this, with the adopted black kid and all that crap, should have been cut completely.

Almost all Hollywood films take on this exagerated "good guy, bad guy" approach, when, in fact, life is seldom so simple.

Mad: I agree with you. I also hate those "based on a true story" movies. I always said that while mass-media manipulate the information, the Hollywood movies manipulate the emotion. They can change the point of view of thousands people about a "true story" and turn the black into white.

There another interesting phenomenon in the Hollywood movies: how to create "enemies" or create fear.

I remember, for example, when I was a child, and we saw movies about WW2, the German were not only the "bad" guys, but they spoke in a language that sounded really bad. In Spain (like in France or Italy) the movies haven't the original soundtrack (I mean, they're not in English, but with Spanish voices), so everyone could understand an American speaking, because you can hear him speaking in Spanish. But the German, like the Japanese or the Russian, always spoke in German, Japanese or Russian, so you couldn't understand a shit of what they were saying. Just imagine that they were really bad guys speaking in a language that you couldn't understand, and always shouting orders. Now that happens with the Arabs. They speak in Arabic and, of course, you don't get a shit. And because they're always shouting in the movies, you only can imagine that they wish you death and hate all the time. I always wondered why other languages which were not English were not overdubbed into Spanish too.

That makes that German, Russian, Arabic or Japanese sound like "enemy" languages, so when you were in the street and heard someone speaking in German, you only could think: "Look, there it goes a nazi". We used to shout to the Germans: "Hey, nazi, go to Germany, Hitlerian", because in our emotional mind, all German were like the German of the movies, that is: nazis.

Hollywood has a great responsability creating all those prejudices against some comunities. A grown adult with some studies can distinguish a movie from real facts, but someone lost in the middle of a country can imagine that what movies portray are real facts, and that all German are nazis and all Arabs are terrorists.

But unlike what many people postulate, Hollywood doesn't do that to motivate people or to create propaganda for some political purpose. Holloywood does it for one simple reason: Money. Movies with nice clean story lines, and identifiable good guy and bad guy characters sell. Movies in which the American guys are not all good guys, and Somali guys are not all bad guys, and where the lines and motivations are not crystal clear don't sell as well.

Of course, I think this is a mistaken notion. Some of the great movies of all time have sold fabulously and have complex characters. Casablanca for example. The Germans are the bad guys - which is fair enough, in WW II they were the bad guys. But Humphrey Bogarts character, Louis, the French gendarme, those characters have something more subtle to them. Stand up guys at the end, but not so easily identifiable as good guys all the time.

Anyway, there are plenty of Hollywood films I like. So I don't want to take the criticism too far. But when they are going to base the film on a true story, then they should tell the true story and not modifiy it. It's not really honest advertising.
