Mohamed Abdi Farah

(SomaliNet) The situation in Bardhere town of Gedo region in southern Somalia is reported to be very tense on Tuesday as heavily armed militia loyal to Islamic Courts Union is advancing to the town while pro government militia prepared to avert any attack from the Islamists.

Residents now fear that major confrontation may rage in the town between Islamic forces and militia loyal to Colonel Bare Hirale, minister of defense in the transitional federal government.

Witnesses in Bardhere told SomaliNet tonight that large military movements by both rivals could be seen.

Bardhere is the last stronghold of Bare Hirale where his Merehan clan is dominant.

Sources close to ICU say that Islamists want to capture the town of Bardhere in Somalia southern Gedo region, which borders with Kenya.

BareÂ’s men were put on high alert after receiving information indicating that Islamic fighters who had departed from Dinsor town of Bay region moved towards Bardhere.

Colonel Abdulahi Sheik Fara-Tag, the commander of the militia loyal to defense minister, now involves in large military movement to go against the advancing Islamists before reaching the town.

Early reports say that Islamic Courts Union have already set a committee to review the situation in Bardhere and the possibility of introducing the Islamic law in that town when it falls into the hands of ICU.

The most outspoken matter in Badhere tonight is the military advance by the Islamic Court to the town where it is now under the control Bare Hirale, the minister of defense who had earlier lost the southern port city of Kismayo in fear of the military influence by the Islamic Courts Union which seized the city without war.

If the Islamic Courts take over Bardhere, it would affirms a total control of whole southern Somalia.

That is exactly what they are trying to do. But it will not be easy and it will not last even if they accomplish this goal. There are anti ICU demonstrations in Northern Mogdishu already. The ICU needs an enemy(like the TFG) and Ethiopia in order to maintain their support from the idiotic somali masses.

True, but that enemy is serving them well.

Give the devil it's due. At least the disaffected now can express their displeasure. Unlike the heydays of Barre's autocratic rule, your adeer, where public displays of displeasure were quelled with massacres and other extra-judicial killings. Like the massacre in Olypic standium in '87 or '88.

Can ICU Affirm Total Control of Whole Southern Somalia ?

Good question! Only time can tell, I think their plan is to take over all of Somalia though not just the south & make it an Islamic state.

Dhusodhere, just to remind you, this topic has nothing to do with the former regime. We are discussing the ICU and it is possible for them to affirm total control of the south. If you want to leave your input concerning this topic, please do so other fucck off.

The battle with the ICU in Bardhere will be a make it or break it fight for Hiraale and the Marehan. I'm surprised the ICU is attacking Bardhere right now. I would think they would concentrate their forces on Baidoa at this point.

theres nobody attacking Baardhere atleast not right now.

its strategically close to impossible. in order for the cimaamad-wearing thugs to attack Baardhere they'll have to vacate Diinsoor and if they do that whats to stop the TFG forces to attack them from the rear?
