THE Sun today launches a campaign to close the veil loophole making a mockery of BritainÂ’s airport security.
We told yesterday how a member of the gang which killed WPC Sharon Beshenivsky sneaked out of Heathrow by donning a Muslim niqab, with just a slit for eyes.
Now we are calling on Home Secretary John Reid to turn passport control at every airport in the country into a veil-free zone.
MPs too are urging action after it emerged that hard-pressed staff carry out only RANDOM passport checks on passengers leaving Britain.
We want these checks to be COMPULSORY with veils lifted in a private area.
If more resources are needed they must be found. Otherwise criminals — and terrorists — are sure to exploit the weakness in future.
Trick ... Mustaf Jama fled in veil
The proposal is not offensive or discriminatory, but merely a common sense measure in dangerous times.
Sun writer Anila Baig exposed the loophole in October when she flew from Leeds-Bradford to Paris without having to raise her veil.
Last night Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: “Everybody entering or exiting the country should have their identity properly verified. Of course it should be done in a sensitive manner, but it must be done. And there should be no exceptions.”
Labour MP Shahid Malik, a Muslim, said: “You can’t allow this situation to happen — every single person must be checked.
“If anyone does not want to be checked, they can’t fly. It is as simple as that.”
Both Mr Davis and Mr Malik called for an inquiry into how gang member Mustaf Jama, 26, an asylum seeker, fled disguised as a Muslim woman with a stolen passport.
Mr Malik insisited: “Procedures need to be tightened up to make sure it never happens again. There needs to be an inquiry and the person responsible should lose their job. Heads must roll.” A court heard Jama was among six men who drove from London to Bradford 13 months ago hoping to grab £100,000 from a travel agents. They were armed with a machinegun, a knife and a 9mm pistol.
Victim ... WPC Sharon and pistol like that used to kill her
A worker activated an alarm and unarmed WPC Beshenivsky and WPC Teresa Milburn, both 38, raced to the scene.
The gang grabbed just £5,000 and shot WPC Beshenivsky — who had three children and two step children — in the heart with the pistol as they escaped.
It was her daughter LydiaÂ’s fourth birthday. WPC Milburn was hit in the shoulder but survived.
JamaÂ’s brother Yusuf, 20, and friend Muzzaker Shah, 25, are due to be sentence for murder, robbery and firearms offences at Newcastle Crown Court tomorrow. Faisal Razzaq, 25, and his brother Hassan, 26, will be sentenced for manslaughter, robbery and firearms offences.
Police are still hunting another man, father-of-six Piran Khan, 60, who also fled the country. The martial arts expert is said to have masterminded the robbery and is believed to be in Pakistan.
Det Supt Andy Brennan of West Yorkshire Police said they remained “grimly determined” to track down Mustaf Jama and Khan.
Tom McGhie, chairman of West Yorkshire Police Federation, said of Jama: “We have concerns that someone who was wanted for a serious offence was able to avoid detection and escape this country by subterfuge.
“Our officers will be extremely upset.”
Tory MP Philip Davies described it as “completely staggering”. He added: “The thought that somebody would be able to wear a veil while passing through passport control is beyond incomprehensible.
“I sincerely hope this was simply a terrible one off mistake. If not, then the implications are extremely serious.”
It also emerged that fugitive Jama had served four jail terms in six years for robbery, theft and firearms offences — yet had been told eight months before the raid that officials had decided NOT to deport him.
WPC Beshenivsky’s best friend Sally Barandiaran, 39, stormed: “Sharon has been let down by the system.
“Jama should have been kicked out of the country years ago after he was convicted of robbery.
“But he was allowed to stay and because of that Sharon ended up losing her life.
“Now to hear that he got out like this to evade justice utterly disgusts me.”
Mustaf and Yusuf Jama, together with a younger brother suspected of stabbing a man in London, had claimed asylum in Britain after fleeing war-torn Somalia. They said they were worried about being shot dead.
Mustaf is thought to have returned there to hide, sheltered by his Darod tribe.
Ministers have asked the governement of the lawless country to help trace him.
Immigration Minister Liam Byrne said that even before the reports of the escape, plans were being drawn up to compel foreign nationals to register biometric identification — like that used for ID cards.
Immigration officers already had the power to ask Muslim women to lift their veils and also to fingerprint them, he said.
But he added: “We think there is a very good case for compelling foreign nationals to register their biometric details with us.
“This story underlines just how important that is.
“We are going to push ahead in the New Year with plans to compel foreign national to register their biometrics with the Home Office and the Government.
“We also think there is a case for new powers for staff on border controls.”
They think his somewhere in cabudwaaq wheres his family is from.
Complete bulshit and lie, just a reason to increase islamophobia. They racists never seem to amase no one.
