Dr. Fatun in collaboration with her husband, a former UNDP president himself, convened and discussed in a matter of urgency and priority the formation of effective and representative formal authority. This was the birth of Puntland, whose first phase of development first began in 1994 up to its completion, 1998.

The success of Puntland was followed by the formation of SSRC and then his election to TFG's president, a campaign heavily funded and supported by Ethiopia. Professor Geedi has a long standing connection to Mela Zenawi but his influence and popularity into the Prime Minister of Somalia came on Abdullahi's coattails.
