OK great story here. To your average (not me -I'm considered abnormal) westerner, Djibouti is a filthy city that seems to be in a state of atrophy. We had a translator working for us in Iraq. He was Somali, but spoke Arabic. He was killed and his family were due to receive the death gratuity. They lived in Mogadischu, so they had to come to Djibouti to receive it. I was asked by the contract to be official government escort, which I agreed to. After we picked up the family, we were driving to a location in the city to make the payment. The oldest son of the mother (victims brother) was also present, and he says to us "Wow, look at the city. It's beautiful. Look how clean it is (I shit you not)." I thought to myself "Man, Mogadischu must be even more focked up than it was when I was there."

great story and typical of somalis.

the funny thing is how somalis always try to to be better muslims than djiboutians. they love to talk about djibouti being a place without a culture and decency yet they are the ones who have butchering each other like no one's business. they talk about alcohol and prostitution in djibouti and thats exactly the fisrt thing they do when they first come to djibouti or europe.

ignorance and hypocricy is a deadly combination attributed to only somalis.

Sure, there is some prostitution and you can get a beer there. But there was prostitution in Somalia when I was there too. Just not as blatant. In Djibouti, it is mostly confined to the bars - as is the alcohol. There is also prostitution and alcohol available in Hargeisa.

You are so right. In the grand scheme of things, some people lose perspective. What's worse, prostitution and alcohol, or slaughtering your own people and destroying your own society? One is small patatoes, and one is major league.

let me paint you a picture.

am siting with somalis and and they are having discussing about somalia/somaliland politics and trying to talk honnestly when in reality they are all doing their best to camaflouge their hatred towards each other. they talk about islam and muslimnimo but the only thing they realy believe in more than Allah and the Prophet (saw) is their qabil.

and without warning all of a suden the gun turne on djibouti and djiboutians. Laughing and annoying thing about it is that when it comes to djibouti they dont talk about the government or even attck you as person but resort to insulting the whole populations; men women and children.

thats somalis... Smile

I have a feeling you can hold your own in any of the discussions.

Look at the board here. When people talk about Americans, as if they were monolithic. Americans come from so many backgrounds, it's impossible to put a label on them. But people always do. Here in Europe I am always hearing about how Americans have no culture (as if people did not bring culture with them when they immigrated) or Americans are ignorant (again, as if they were somehow intrinsically different from people from elsewhere). Look at all the Americans who are ethnic Somali. Many were born in Somalia. Now, somehow, they've been transformed and are uncultured ignoramuses. Never ceases to amaze me.

I like Djibouti. I am a critic of the government. And I hate the prices there. But I like the people and the city actually functions, which is a plus.

Yep, that's what it's like in Djibouti. And not a lot of white people. Avoid Menelik square and the legion compounds, and you won't see hardly any. What's up with the "don't like white people" thing?

Coooool Ill keep that in mind, Im going on a 9 week summer trip of East Africa this year and thats another to list, as long as I can find a clean, safe hotel.

White people are just plain strange Mac. No other way of putting it. White men with jungle fever are the worst I have ever encountered, come to my uni and youll see it...so weird. And the ones that dont always want to impress you with their knowledge of 'black' things, and how they listen to rnb blah blah blah....dont know how to act around you, and are just awkward to talk to . White women......they just dont like me for some reason. Never had a white girl friend...since maybe year 7 of school. There are more reasons, but I cant be bothered to type them all, some other time.

I'm the opposite. I am totally comfortable around Somali people (not black people - although I have no problem with blacks, my specialty is Somali people). At times I am more comfortable around them than white people.
