The rhetoric reinforced fears the IslamistsÂ’ hasty withdrawal would spawn a guerrilla insurgency, playing to the strength of their armed Shabab wing of young radicals.

Goading them on was a purported audio tape by Al Qaeda deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri, which on Friday urged the Islamists to launch an Iraq-style insurgency of suicide and other forms of attack against Ethiopian forces.

They have bought into the cult of the guerilla, as if guerilla's can't be defeated.

There two possible responses to guerilla warfare. One is that they are defeated by the Somalis themselves, who refuse to support them.

The other is that the country stays in a permanent state of turmoil, with factions oppossed to the Islamists being supported by outside influences.

IN 1998, WHEN THEY BOMBED THE TWO EMBASSIES OF NARIOBI, I WAS IN EAST LEIGH . I HEARD THE BLAST OF THE BOMB FROM THAT SECTION OF NARIOBI, WHICH IS LIKE 40 MILES FROM THE SCENE. I ASKED MYSELF, WHAT THESE INNOECENT PEOPLE DID TO DESERVE SUCH CORPORAL PUNISHMENT. IT NEVER CEASES ME TO AMAZE THAT THE CAUSE OF PALESTINE STATE IS DONE FOR ALL THIS AND MANY PEOPLE ARE DYING BECAUSE OF PALESTINE PEOPLE WHO REFUSED TO RECOGNIZE ISRAEL AND RENOUNCE VIOLENCE.

I MET A PALESTINE MAN. HE TOLD ME FRANKLY THAT WHO EVER AMONG THEM RECOGNIZE THE EXISTANCE AND THE RIGHT OF THE ISRAEL TO LIVE IN PEACE IS A TRAITOR AND SHOULD BE BEHEADED .

Eastleigh is not 40 miles from downtown, where the blast occurred, but I get your point.

Excellent post, and I could not agree with you more.

Funny side story. I went to Nairobi in 99 on vacation. And I spent a lot of time in Eastleigh. A friend of mine from Nairobi asked me where I was staying, and I said I had a little place called the Azee House in Parklands (it was only ten bucks a night) and during the day I was hanging out in Eastleigh where I could talk Somali politics with the locals. He looks at me and says "You really are mad, those people are animals." I asked him (he worked at the US Embassy) "Did you ever go to Eastleigh?" He says "Of course not". I said "Well the people there, they're just people like everywhere else. They're not animals. You ought to go there sometime and try being a little friendly. We don't need to spend all of our time hanging out in the Sheridan and eating at expensive restaraunts." He never did go there. I love Eastleigh. I really should go back. I haven't been there since 99.
