The AC-130 attacks were meant to provide 'cover' for US special forces.

The US would not use AC-130s to support an Ethiopian incursion. It would be too visible and too costly politically to do it for the sake of Ethiopian troops.

It was most likely done to create a 'LZ" (Landing Zone) cleared of hostile combatants. Sort of like cover fire.
