dd,

quite frankly i'm more interested in the symbol then those in allegence to it. the revesal of the crescent moon(an Islamic symbol) is mostly used by adversaries of Islam(like the freemasons and such)..this signifies the overturn of the faith. ever wonder when bush or other elite western countries make state visit to places like Pakistan or Turkey, where their flag contians the crescent. it is almost always turned so it faces the opposite direction... and in this particular pic, the crescent is fliped and the Christian cross is placed in the center....hmmmm Rolling Eyes

syl's stated objectives were to unify all Somali territories, including the NFD and the Ogaden; not only unify but also to create opportunities for universal modern education; to develop the Somali language by a standard national orthography; to safeguard Somali interests; and to oppose the restoration of Italian rule. SYL policy banned clannishness so that the thirteen founding members, although representing four of Somalia's six major clans, refused to disclose their ethnic identities. Although the SYL enjoyed considerable popular support from northerners, the principal parties in British Somaliland were the Somali National League (SNL), mainly associated with the Isaaq clan-family, and the United Somali Party (USP), which had the support of the Dir (Gadabuursi and Issa) and Darod (Dulbahante and Warsangali) clan-families.

Zulieka,

My bad, they're only Mudulood Hawiye members not all of Hawiyes. Our youth league was fashioned after african youth leagues prior to independence so you might want to look into that to find out the reasons for their emblems.

Not sure about reveresed crescent and that signifying their anti-islamic views. I hope they were anti-islamic. Can you imagine more evil, downright false and wrong and retarded idealogy than islam? This is an idealogy that lets ppl like Gogo, a bitterly bigoted woman who made herself a name from maligning a whole swathes of ppl, the false conviction that all is Ok if she just mumbles some arabic gibberish.

all that stuff sound good and i'm sure it was part of their mandate, however, being the symbolist junky that I am i usually pay more heed to the cover than what's inside, i know this method is perverbially dismissed. anyways, i just wanted to know, from those in the know, if S.Y.L actually liberally waved this symbol around during thier heydays. and what was the public reaction or sentiments rather, toward it?

dd,

u talkin' about gogo? as in my gal gogarad? war dee ka baydh inanta baan ku idhi. adiguba sometimes caqli of landfill-like baad opinion ka dhiibtaa dee. extend here the same courtesy hadaba. Laughing

Somali heroes Very Happy

But I think they made a mistake with the symbol in the middle. It sort of looks like a cross! I donÂ’t know if IÂ’m analysing it too much but that was the first thing that hit me when I saw that image afew years ago. I then assumed maybe it stands for uniting all Somalis including Muslims and ChristiansÂ… that symbol definitely looks like a cross.
