Rising insecurity in Lower Shabelle region: Official
22 Jan 22, 2007, 14:34
MOGADISHU, Somalia Jan 22 (Garowe Online) - The leading security official in Lower Shabelle region, southern Somalia, said Monday at a press conference in Mogadishu that the region was experiencing “rising” insecurity following the withdrawal of the Islamic Courts militia last month.
Ali Ganey, regional security commander appointed by the interim Somali government, said “armed thugs” stop travellers on major roads leading into Lower Shabelle and extorted funds and whatever else by force.
Ganey said militiamen setup illegal checkpoints on the road from Mogadishu that goes through towns in Lower Shabelle, but that the local administration had taken some police action to prevent the crimes.
The security commander said police detained 7 militiamen yesterday after they erected a roadblock but appealed to the interim government for further assistance to restore order.
The Somali government faces the challenge of restoring order after 16 years of civil war, especially in chaotic Mogadishu where the government is now based.

Disciplinary army officers appointed in Somalia
Aweys Osman Yusuf
Mogadishu 21, Jan.07 ( Sh.M.Network) SomaliaÂ’s central army command has appointed disciplinary army officers on Sunday for Banadir (Mogadishu), Middle and Lower Shabelle provinces, southern Somalia.
Gen. Abdulahi Moalim Ali, the army commander, has made the nominations in a decree issued from his office.
Moalim said the army will be engaged in prison works. “The Somali disciplinary army is ready to play positive positions in securing the peace in the country”, he told reporters.
He has indicated that the army would also be visible in the streets of the capital during the three-month state of emergency.
This is the first time that disciplinary army was nominated for prison guarding. Moalim pointed out that prisons that have not been used in the past 16 years of anarchy and civil wars were repaired.
The news comes as armed militias in southern Somalia set up illegal roadblocks, taking extortion money from people, buses and trucks traveling the roads linking the capital Mogadishu to southern provinces of the country.
A committee for security operations and restoration of peace in Mogadishu has suggested today to the transitional government that army police should be set up for the districts in the capital to secure the peace of the Mogadishu streets where unknown armed assailants have ambushed government and Ethiopian military barracks in the past.
