Sheik Sharif
(SomaliNet) Hussein Mohamed Aideed the deputy prime and interior minister Monday has welcomed the yield of the Islamist leader to the Kenyan police as positive step towards reconciliation in Somalia.

Mr. Aideed said his government would welcome Sheikh Sharif in Mogadishu if he gives up the acts of being opposition to the government.

Yusuf Omar Al-Azhar, Somalia presidentÂ’s advisor who is now in Nairobi, Kenya asked for the trail of Sheik Ahmed accusing him of charges against the humanity.

He said Sheik was a leader who was responsible for the deaths of six thousands Somalis who were killed in the latest battles in Somalia with the Somalia-Ethiopia forces.

The top leader of the ousted Islamist movement who has been hiding in the southern tip of Somalia finally surrendered to Kenyan government and now he is in Nairobi under the protection of the Kenyan authorities, officials said Monday.

Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, the leader of executive council of the ousted Islamic Courts was arrested at the border and taken to Nairobi where the police is questioning him for several issues.

Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, who the US government sees as a moderate cleric had crossed the border into Kenya and gave himself up to a police station at the border.

Sheik Ahmed who has still popular support is believed that he could play a key role in the reconciliation process of the war-torn country (Somalia). U.S. Ambassador Michael Ranneberger has repeatedly said Ahmed is a moderate Islamic leader who should be part of a national reconciliation process in Somalia.

Mr. Sharif was born on 25 July in 1964 in rural area of Mahaday district of Middle Shabelle region, where he went to Koran School. Mahaday district is 110 miles northeast of the capital. He had finished his intermediate and secondary study in Egyptian administered Sheikh Sufi School in Mogadishu.

After graduation from Kordafan University in Sudan where he majored in geography and Arabic language, he returned to Somalia in 1998. He has also learnt in Libya.

Early June 2006, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the leader of the ousted Islamic Courts Union (ICU) became unexpectedly one of the youngest popular Somali leaders and joins the movers and shakers of Somali politics after he rooted out the cursed warlords of the US backed Alliance for Restoration of Peace and Counter Terrorism (ARPCT) and ended 15 years of gun-rule in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.

Ever since, his religion based ICU was the most powerful and popular faction in Somalia, winning every battle they encountered and capturing every city they set their eyes on but later faded out in short period.
