South Africa says no troops for Somalia
Attempts to establish an African peacekeeping force in Somalia have suffered a setback with South Africa deciding against sending troops.

South Africa says its defence force is already overstretched and that it does not have enough soldiers to send to Somalia.

The Government has indicated that it may offer technical support to the peacekeeping effort.

The African Union has agreed to send 8,000 peacekeepers to Somalia to support the interim Government and maintain law and order.

This week, Ethiopian troops began to pull out of the country after helping the Government defeat Islamist forces.

At the same time, there have been a series of attacks on Government positions, the latest killing four civilians.

So far Nigeria, Malawi and Uganda have said that they will contribute to the peacekeeping effort.
