(SomaliNet) The Italian Prime Minister Romani Prodi told African leaders on Monday that his government will host a peace conference for Somalia once stability returns to its war-torn former colony.

Prodi told a summit of African Union leaders that he was keeping a close eye on events in Somalia where an Islamist movement was recently routed from the capital Mogadishu and the other towns it held.

"Italy is following the situation in Somalia with concern," said Prod.

"We can confirm our commitment to organize peace talks on Somalia, when the conditions allow, in order that peace can take hold."

An African Union peacekeeping force is meant to be deployed in Somalia by the end of the month but has been delayed as only a handful of countries have expressed willingness to contribute troops.
