was it one of those 800 page books? the cover looks familiar.

Screw, no, it was a gamebook, very short books in which you're the protagonist and have to make choices every now and then. Eg,

"If you wish to draw your weapon and attack your unknown assailant, turn to 273.

If you wish to try and pull free of his grasp, turn to 160."
