A NEW study on the sex habits of teenagers has found that children are getting their sex education from internet porn.
The findings have prompted calls for internet filtering, improved sex education and more discussions at home about sex.
More than 300 teenagers across Australia were asked in-depth questions about their sex lives on an internet survey last year.
It found that children were getting most of their information about sex from internet porn before sex education programs had kicked in at school and children as young as seven were engaging in sexual activity.
The findings have been published in a book called The Sex lives of Australian Teenagers, to be released next month.
It found that:
MORE than half of girls under 12 had seen porn and 97 per cent of girls under 15.
70 PER CENT of boys have seen porn by 12 and 100 per cent by 15.
MORE than 12 per cent of girls had their first sexual experience with a partner when they were between eight and 10 years old. A third of girls had it at 11 to 13 years old and a third 14-16 years old.
EIGHTEEN per cent of boys had their first sexual experience with a partner when they were between five and seven years old, 13.5 per cent at eight to 10 years old and 38 per cent at 14 to 16.
Author Joan Sauers said easy access to porn at such a young age was one of the most disturbing findings of the study.
"Kids will go to a friend's house and type the word 'boobs' in Google and be confronted with hard-core porn," Ms Sauers said.
Talking openly about sex and its emotional side was crucial.
"Talk to your kids about it so when they do see porn they can put it into context," she said.
"Porn is created by men for men and we don't want kids going into their teens thinking these things are expected of them."
Australian Family Association Victorian state secretary Gabrielle Walshe called for improved porn filtering from internet service providers.
Australian Childhood Foundation chief Dr Joe Tucci said tougher rules on sex in the media were needed.
"Children have been fed a diet of sex since they were six or eight years old," he said.
"We have to curb companies using sex to market products that aren't targeted at children but children see."
Teens misled on sex !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
