Somali government denies Ethiopian troops fired mortars in Mogadishu overnight

Aweys Osman Yusuf

Mogadishu 12, Feb.07 ( Sh.M.Network) - The government deputy defense minister, Salad Ali Jelle, has denied that Ethiopian tanks were used in last night’s deadly mortar attacks in the capital Mogadishu where at least three people were killed.

Jelle said, “A group of terrorists were behind the rocket and mortar attacks in Mogadishu,” stressing that the Ethiopians did not launch any mortar bombings in the capital.

Despite the minister’s denial, people in Mogadishu, who showed the ruins of an artillery shell to journalists, said it was tank buckshot fired by Ethiopian forces based in military camps in south of Mogadishu and the presidential compound.

At least three people were killed and a dozen more were wounded after unknown gunmen and Ethiopian troops accompanied by the government forces apparently exchanged heavy artillery fires and gunshots.

A policeman was killed when mortars were fired at the presidential compound.

A father and his son were cut to pieces by a mortar fire after it had landed on roof made house in Jungale neighborhood, North Mogadishu. Abdulkadir Marsho, a resident in Jungale, told Shabelle last night that the mortar fire was launched from the presidential compound in which Ethiopian and government troops are based. At least three people were wounded in the attacks.

The exchange of artillery fires that took place around 3:10 am local time and shook the whole city hit different neighborhoods in the capital last night. A janitor was wounded in Yaqshid district, north of the capital; while a police officer was also wounded in rocket propel grenades fired at a police station in Wadajir district, south of Mogadishu.

Unknown gunmen have also ambushed and fired rocket propelled grenades at Banadir hotel and a local FM radio dubbed Banadir. The hotel, which houses government officials, and the radio station are in one complex building.

The attacks came as government ministers approved a war on terrorism law yesterday. The government said explosions in parts of the country will be regarded as terrorism.

Several government officials and civilians were wounded in the port city of Kismayu on Sunday after a rocket bomb was targeted at town square where senior government officials and hundreds of people gathered to welcome the country’s second army commander-in-chief, Abdi Mahdi.

At least five people were killed in the incident as government forces at the scene opened fire at every direction after the explosion, sparking a stampede.

focking traitor...

The 'terrorist' line is getting old walaahi....he accuses some mythical terrorists for everything. He is feeding this to the international community when every Somali person knows what is really happening. The traitors are getting disgusting with their shameful lies nacalaakutaal. They are knowingly targeting civilians as well as firing indiscriminately all over the place. Their behaviour is unacceptable.....as occupying forces they are not allowed to fire at civilians.

"They are knowingly targeting civilians as well as firing indiscriminately all over the place. Their behaviour is unacceptable.....as occupying forces they are not allowed to fire at civilians."

This is true. But equally true is the fact that civilians are not allowed to fire at occupying forces and personnel in civilian attire attempting to hide amongst the population are not allowed to to engage in combat operations.

If you fight an insurgency, the civilian population group that hides the insurgents suffers the most - every time.
