It was a fascinating campaign. The Somali National Army had built a large armored force by the mid 70s. Although psychologically Africa is really light infantry country, and for a variety of reasons it is very hard for States to build mechanized forces in Africa, Somalia had a large mechanized force in 1977. The main effort struck Ethiopia from Hargeisa to Jijiga and then pushed on toward Dire Dawa. Supporting efforts seized K'ebri Dehar and Gode. The Ethiopian Society had been badly fractured at that point through misrule of the Derg. But when the Soviet block decided to throw in its hat and support the Ethiopians (compelled to make a choice), the Somalis knew they had to cut the rail line from Djibouti to Dire Dawa to have a chance of forcing a settlement before Soviet supplies could reach en masse. Unfortunately, for the Somalis, the Cubans, under Soviet tutledge, dropped an Airborne Division vicinity of Jijiga and cut the Somali supply lines. Mechnized forces require a huge logisitical train, and when the supply lines were cut, the jig was up. Unable to move without fuel, it became impossible to cut the rail line through which the Ethiopian Army was receiving armor from the Soviets.

It is true that without external assistance, the Ethiopians would have lost that war. HOWEVER, we have to balance that with the understanding that without external support, the Somali National Army would have had no armor, and without some sort of huge technilogical edge, the Somalis could never take on the MUCH larger Ethiopian forces.

The first aeriel envelopment with an armoured forces was used against us.
we are in the history pages, the same with the 1920 bombing of taleex by the british.

I disagree however that without the armour we could not have taken on the Ethiopians.

Lets say hypothetically that Ethiopia does not get soviet supplies at all, and the Isrealis do not go in to retrofit and pilot thier F-5's.

and on the somali side that after the capture of Jijiga, Gode and qabridahar , there is an embargo and we cannot get soviet weapons from the egypt, north korea or the chinese.

I believe we still would have won becuase we held the Gara Marda pass, and if we held the high ground around Harar and places like Babile.

and outside of the mountainous areas we had the advantage becuase we used more "technicals" than the Ethiopians, we were more mobile becuase we used much more land rovers and toyota pickups. compare this to the very large but essentially a massive infantry army on foot.

with that we could have easily taken on the 50,000 plus newly conscripted peasants and what remained of thier regular army.

Gurey
You misunderstand me. The reason you took the passes in the first place was because you had the armor. All other things being equal, Ethiopia has always had the HUGE advantage in a larger population base and a larger economy with which to support military operations. It's that simple. You caught the Ethiopians with their pants down once, that is unlikely to happen again.

So you saying that size counts more than other factors?

what if a future somalia catches up with the Ethiopians and fields an army with better training and equipment as good as thier thiers.

would it still be impossible?
anything is possible MAC, anything,

unfortunatley somalia is doomed to failure

In order to take on Ethiopia , we need a UNITED Somalia.
Even with their larger pop number , the somalis have a culture of warfare that the Ethiopians do not. As for the larger economy , gimme a break Madmac. If it weren't for America handing out cash and securing IMF and World Bank loans , they'd be all dead by now.

ina baxar in modern warfare a warrior culture can actually be a disadvantage.

a massive army of scared shitless, forceablly consctipted peasants can be more effective than an army made up of warriors.

if we are fighting with swords and on horseback than the oposite counts,
a somali can take on 5 ethiopians each.

a warrior would find it difficult to obey orders.
There will be less discipline.

and in modern warefare coordinated movement and firepower is more effective than individual
display of fighting prowess.

I disagree gurey . Discipline can be instilled in any unit depending on their leaders.
On a single individual level , I personally would find it easier to channel one's agressiveness rather than turning a peaceful farmer into an unflinching killa.

Coordinated movement iyoo firepower are not part of one's character , gurey . Laughing
