Chapter 23 Journey to Bosaso
Colonel Abdi Beendid woke up sweating in his tent. The extreme heat of Baari was suffocating and one wondered who would live in this God Forsaken place. Abdi Beendiid brushed his teeth and washed his face and was soon out the tent.
Waiting patiently outside were his officers who were fully dressed in their combat uniforms and sitting around a table eating a scrumptious breakfast of canjeero & codkhac. They all stood up and saluted Col. Beendiid as he sat down.
"Colonel, we have a present for you," laughed Lt. EOMM. His face was beaming with pride as if he won the lottery.
"Lt, what is it ? Can it wait after breakfast" asked Cl. Beendiid as he tucked into his canjeero and codkhac.
"Yes, sir. It can," replied Lt. EOMM.
Soon the officers finished their breakfast and finalized their plan of attack. Lt. EOMM gave his updated intelligence gathering report from the SLA Scouting Teams. Lt. Guhaad presented the status of the infantry units. Lt. Karbash informed the team about the readiness of the artillery and mobile units.
"Everything looks good. This should be a piece of cake, gentleman," said Col. Beendiid. "Lt. EOMM, what was this present you were talking about ?"
"Bring out the Farting Man !" shouted Lt EOMM.
A figure wearing a dirty brown jalabiib with chains on its legs and arms was brought out by four SLA MPs.
"Why is this woman in chains ? What is the meaning of this ?" said Col Beendiid who was angry at the mistreatment of women.
"Take off the niiqaab," asked Lt.EOMM. "Colonel, I present to you, Major MJ Pride, Air Defense Commander of the TFG !!"
The sounds of laughter filled the air as everyone realized who the POW was. Major MJPride was the son-in-law of Afbiijo and had been the pride of the TFG. It was very amusing to see the highest ranking officer in a jalabiib.
"Lt. EOMM, what a pleasant surpise. Where did you catch him?" asked Col Beendiid.
"A team of scouts caught him last night near Biyo Kulule Hot Springs as he was driving in a convoy of 3 vehicles trying to flee Bosaso. He was brought in when one of the scouts recognized his ugly face. We have received valuable intelligence on the TFG based on documents seized in MJPrides vehicle," said EOMM.
"Excellent ! I am going to recommend you for a promotion, Lt !" said Col. Beendiid. "Gentlemen, we are ready. Lets rock and roll ! We move out in one hour.'
It hit Col. Beendiid that he had forgotten one key component in his plans. Growing up in Mudug, he had been told of the sorcery of the Punanilanders. It was said nothing happens in Punaniland without Afbiijo's 60 sorcerers reviewing that decision. The colonel called for Corporal Musika Man who was from the heart of Konfur Sorcery, Gobwein, a sleepy town near Kismayo. Rumor had it that he was the son of a famous Sheik who dealt with sixiir. He was known among the camp for his fa'al (oracles).
"Musika, I need your help. Tell me, are their any charms or spells cast against my men and mission," asked Col. Beendiid.
"Let us see what the fa'al says !" he replied.
The Colonel threw several bones on the ground and Musika read them.
"Victory is assured if you refuse the gift of the conquered. Under any circumstances, refuse what they give you for it will destroy you and your mission. Make sure to sacrifice two bulls: one white and one black whom you will see near the ocean. Only eat the flesh of those animals and not food from the conquered," said Musika in a cryptic voice.
Colonel Beendiid was not one who believed in the occult but did not dismiss Musika's advice.
