Somalia: A Suicide Car Bomb is Targeted At an Ethiopian Military Base in Southern Somalia

A car bomb exploded at the Ethiopian military base in Afgoi district, 30 km south of the Somali capital Mogadishu on Tuesday. Number of casualties is still unknown, according to Shabelle reporter, Mayow in the district.

Mayow said the sounds of the explosion could be heard in the entire district. Witnesses told Shabelle that a suicide bomber in pick-truck crammed with explosives forcefully entered inside the army camp where the explosions took place.


Two bomb attacks were targeted at an Ethiopian convoy passing in the main road linking the capital to Afgoi in the past. This, however, is the third suicide attack against Ethiopians since the fighting between Ethiopian troops backing the transitional government and Islamic insurgents along with clan militias started late last month.

Two questions:

a. Whatever tactic, whether within the laws of land warfare or not?

b. You do realize that using VBIEDs causes security forces to over-react. Next time the Ethiopians see a vehicle driving down the street they will light it up, and all the others they see, killing whatever poor slobs happen to be in it.

If you try and hide amongst the civilian population, it is ALWAYS that population which suffers most.
