Somalia: Mine explosion kills the conspirator in Kismayu

Mogadishu 03, May.07 ( Sh.M.Network) One person was killed and umber of other people was wounded in the port city of Kismayu, 500 km south of the capital Mogadishu last night.

According to the commander of Kismayu police force, Ibrahim Shan Qool, unidentified man who was planting a mine in the main road to the airport where a government delegation was due to pass on Thursday was killed after the mine exploded during planting.

“The conspirator was planning to explode a convoy of a government delegation that recently arrived from Mogadishu to mediate between two rival clans on their way to the airport. The delegation is flying back to the capital today,” Qool said.

He said the police will investigate other people who may be behind the failed plot to kill the transitional government officials.

A delegation led by the interior minister, Mohammed Guled Gamo Dhere, arrived in the port city to arbitrate two powerful clans that fought over control of the city. One of the two clans seized the town chasing government soldiers away.

Somalia’s Ethiopian backed government seized control of the capital Mogadishu on 29 April defeating remnants of the Islamic Courts fighters.

Meanwhile three major business companies based in Mogadishu have surrendered their arms to the government Thursday. Large numbers of arms were placed at government’s police center in the capital.

Abdi Qeybdid, head of the national police force, along with contingents of armed police and Ugandan troops was among the AU and Somali officers that were receiving the weapons brought in pickup and cargo trucks by the tradesmen.
