Do you guys ever think about the future of Somalia and Somalis?

A lot of elderly people I talk to say Somalia will never be the same again. Could it be old age that is making them so pessimistic or do they see something we don't? It's almost like they see that it's so broken that we will never have a state again.

Where do you think the Diaspora is headed? On the bright side, one thing is for sure we will have an infusion of new races in our gene pool......I have seen (some live, some internet) Somalis mixed with everything from Polish to Korean Laughing

Do you think the people in the West will just eventually lose touch with Somalia and just get absorbed into the melting pot?

Have we lost our culture? Are we losing our religion? Are we Somali any longer?

What is wrong with spreading your wings a little?Are you suggesting that free mixing of races in such a way could potentially poision the future for Somalis?

First it is useful to identify the different types of Somalis.. so far I can identify three types.

1. There are the Muslim faithful Somalis, they care more about learning arabic and history of the deen than they care about Somali history... these people are more likely to bring their children in a more cultured environment....yet they too are likely to not teach their children much about Somalia and Somalis, fearing their children will be exposed to qabiil and fitnah.


2. The cosmopolitan Somalis tend to have the 'when in Rome, do as the Romans' philosophy.... their children wouldn't know much about Somalia and Somali culture and would not even call themselves Somali. The children will never learn the language and will have silly names like John and Marcus...

3. The stuck in the past, these are probably the worst.... they have skewed vision of Somali history and culture and resulting from post war syndrome...they carry intense hate.... sometimes against other clans... most of the times against all Somalis... they try to disassociate themselves from Somalis but unlike the cosmopolitan Somalis will remain stuck in Somali affairs and foster clan hate and teach their children to carry the same hate... resulting in the loss of Somali history and culture. This group are also likely not to develop much nor settle as they have a vision of returning back to Somalia some day.... and their children are likely to get lost.



I think Somali culture will be totally different and that is nothing to be scared of, the important thing is to identify what is our culture and history and to instil the best of what it means to be Somali in the future generations....the most important being the language. The best thing for the Somali Diaspora is to stop obsessing about returning to Somalia and to develop a good settled communities in their new homes.... only then can we become good productive communities that take pride in their history and culture.

Somalia is likely to benefit from having Somalis all over the world, the idea of permanently returning back to Somalia is the cause of the loss of culture. While parents go on about the good old days ignoring the needs of their children....going to wedding after wedding and spending day after day on marfish and what have you..... their children get lost...

Look at u- now-- all reseigned and content and even God forbid-- a little modernistic. Look at you preaching --lets settle for the West- with our starbucks cafe place and just lets forget the millions of 'our' somali brothers and sisters dying every month in Somalia. I didn't say I don't want to help Somalia and Somalis. I was never going to permanently return to Somalia anyway... I just want for Somalia to have an effective government and for the Somali Diaspora to help rebuild the country, not for the Diaspora to pack up their bags and move back to Somalia.. that is not gonna help anyone.

There are many people who opened schools, hospitals and businesses but still live abroad. We need to be powerful communities in the west to do more for Somalia....learn from the Jews and Asians.
