Stoning to death of girl provokes wave of killings
This horrific story happened in what has been advertised by the US army as safe area of northern Iraq.

The stoning to death of a teenage girl belonging to the Yazidi religious sect because she fell in love with a Muslim man has led to a spiral of violence in northern Iraq in which 23 elderly factory workers have been shot dead and 800 Yazidi students forced to flee their university in Mosul.
The killings began with an act of brutality horrific even by Iraqi standards.
A 17-year-old girl called Doaa Aswad Dekhil from the town of Bashika in the northern province of Nineveh converted to Islam. She belonged to the Yazidi religion, a mixture of Islam, Judaism and Christianity as well as Zoroastrian and Gnostic beliefs. The 350,000-strong Kurdish- speaking Yazidi community is centred in the north and east of Mosul and has often faced persecution in the past, being denounced as "devil worshippers".
On 7 April, Doaa returned home after she had converted to Islam in order to marry a Sunni Muslim who was also a Kurd. She had been told by a Sunni Muslim cleric that her family had forgiven her for her elopement and conversion. Instead she was met in Bashika by a large mob of 2,000 people led by members of her family.

Damn, everyday you learn a new thing. I have never heard of this religion call Yazidi before, I even took a religious course in College. Anyway, thats truly a sad story.

With such tragic violence taking place daily in Iraq, one can only wonder in anger how anyone could possibly think the United States can restore any order? Oh well, i guess freedom is on the march!!

Jr,
Are we going to agree that indeed there is a civil war in Iraq today? Something the US is not willing to acknowledge.

Very sad indeed. Worse part is those who r behind the killing think their act was justified and go on doing the same thing at every opportunity.
jr why r u under the impression that the U.S actually wants order and peace in Iraq?

Ismahan,
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I will also add that this is now becoming what can only be described as quagmire by design.
Gatspy,
I think it was their interest at the beginning, but the situation has gotten out of hand, and they now seek a face saving exit, but that exit has been complicated by this focked up beyond any repair situation that is taken place daily in Iraq.

Wherever you have Arabs or Muslims, you have trouble. Pretty consistent in that way.
Religion socks.

It's an old pre-islam religion. They added some of jewdism, christanity and islam practices. It's an old middle eastern religion. they are in iran, turkey, syria and iraq. Majority are Kurdish. They were called divil workshipers. I wish if I knew why their name drives from Yazid ibn moaweyah. their's historical events with their name. Just doesn't add it up.

Hyper,
THanks. I know that Yazid ibn moaweyah mother was a christian, and he was not very religions and experiemented with different things. He didnt get along very well with the shia and later of the sunnis. He also had a son named Yazid. But I doubt that has anything to do with the religion per se.

Ismahan, if you read about them{you wont get much about them, because they don't talk about their believes, anyway} They came famous the Omayyata's era. I guess that is reason they call themselves that name. We always call them devil workshipers, of course in Arabic.

I know about them since I was about 7 or young as 5, it use to be my bed story.
It is the group who killed Xassan the twin brother of Xussein in the battle of Karbala in Iraq way back centuries ago.
