SOMALIA: Kidnapped Palestinian man handed over to government officers

Mogadishu 11, May.07 ( Sh.M.Network) A Somali-Palestinian man who was seized from the port town of Kismayu, 500 KM south of Mogadishu, was handed over to Somali government officers on Friday. Unknown gunmen kidnapped the man of Palestinian origin from Kismayu and demanded ransom. Residents told Shabelle by phone that the abductors demanded a large sum of money.


A resident in the port city told Shabelle on the condition of anonymity that after the kidnappers found out the family of the hostage was very poor, they decided to link him to terrorists and hand him over to the government officers in the town.


Reports from Buulo Gaduud, on the edge of Ksimayu where the officers are based, said they were investigating the victim over terrorism links. Speaking in Arabic, the father of the victim Ibrahim Hassan Mohammed told local journalists that his boy was innocent and never had links with any terrorist group. He said he would fight for the release of his son. “I will contact with the government officials and I will do what ever it takes to get my son back safely,” he said.


The Somali government has not yet commented on the issue specifically. The interim parliament has recently ratified anti-terrorism bill consenting government soldiers and Ethiopians to seize suspects and hold them in custody without a trial. Experts said they have been concerned about the bill.


With the help of Ethiopian troops, the Somalia government took a control of the whole capital early this month after bitter battles with the remnants of the Islamic Courts.
