Morocco: Police arrest 100 African migrants

Published on: 2008-06-24 05:45:23

(SomaliNet) The Map news agency said on Monday that Moroccan police arrested 100 African migrants after they tried to storm through a border post of the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

Twenty-two people from various sub-Saharan countries were arrested on Monday near Nador, northern Morocco, and 78 were detained on Sunday, after migrants attacked the entry point in a bid to reach Spanish soil.

Melilla is a tiny Spanish outpost situated on the African continent, on the Mediterranean Sea\'s southern coast but surrounded by Morocco.

They were driven back by Moroccan and Spanish police.
Sunday\'s incidents came amid reports of a rising flow of illegal African immigrants to Spain.

It was the first major attack on Melilla by Africans seeking to migrate to Europe since July 2006, when one of them was killed in the attempt.-AFP
