(SomaliNet) In an effort to push the Nigerian government to honour a pay deal, Nigerian teachers began an indefinite strike on Monday, union officials said.
\"The strike is in progress nationwide because government has repeatedly failed to implement an enhanced pay structure for our members,\" Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) area leader Ade Ademeso said.
Nelson Onem, NUT deputy president told reporters in Abuja on Sunday that the ongoing secondary school certificate examinations would be disrupted as a result of the strike.
\"There will be no teaching, invigilating or marking of both internal and external examinations,\" he said.
The teachers went on a three-day strike two weeks ago, shutting down primary and secondary schools, but suspended the action after the government pledged to improve pay.
Teaching is among the worst paid professions in the oil rich country and the unions are demanding that the government start the new pay package immediately.-AFP
