Zimbabawe: President Mugabe swears in ZANU-PF vice presidents

Published on: 2008-10-14 02:17:25

(SomaliNet) Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has sworn in two ZANU-PF officials as vice presidents.

Under the terms of a power sharing agreement, the vice presidential posts should be held by members of his party.

However, the inaugurations came after Mr Mugabe\'s controversial decision to give the key ministries of defence, finance, information and foreign affairs to ZANU-PF officials.

Experts say the president\'s actions are seen as a provocation which have further endangered negotiations between ZANU-PF and the opposition MDC on forming a joint government. MDC spokesperson Nelson Chamisa said: \"Whatever appointments or acts that do not address the woes of the country are meaningless.\"

Former South African president Thabo Mbeki is en route to Harare in an attempt to salvage the power sharing deal he helped broker last month. The European Union has strongly condemned Mr Mugabe\'s actions and says it is considering new sanctions against Zimbabwe in case the president refuses to honour the agreement on a fair division of power.- RNW
