Zimbabwe: Opposition chief Tsvangirai rejects SADC compromise

Published on: 2008-11-11 02:25:36

(SomaliNet) Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he wants to form a government of national unity as soon as possible.

Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party has asked the Movement for Democratic Change to present their candidates for ministerial posts.

President Mugabe also said he hoped that MDC leader and intended prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai would agree with a compromise proposal drafted by southern African nations.

At a summit in Johannesburg, the 15 leaders of the Southern Africa Development Cooperation said Mr Mugabe and Mr Tsvangirai should form a government of national unity immediately.

The SADC proposal includes two ministers, one from each party, for the contested interior ministry, which runs the police.

Opposition leader Tsvangirai has rejected the compromise and still demands the main ministerial posts are divided equally between the two parties.-RNW
