(SomaliNet) At least one person died and 2,000 others were made homeless when torrential rains swept across the Burundian capital Bujumbura, local officials said Tuesday.
\"The torrential rains hit the capital on Monday and caused serious damage in our neighbourhood,\" Godelieve Biruhiye, a local official for the Kinama district, told reporters.
She said that more than 700 houses had been completely destroyed by the violent storm, killing one person and wounding six others in that neighbourhood alone.
The end of October marks the beginning of the rainy season in the small central African republic.
Burundi had emerged relatively unscathed from record floods that have killed hundreds and left hundreds of thousands homeless across sub-Saharan Africa between July and October. - Sapa-AFP
