Kenya: Deadly bomb hits capital Nairobi

Published on: 2007-06-11 10:22:42

(SomaliNet) An explosion at the city centre in Kenya’s capital Nairobi this morning left one person confirmed dead and several seriously injured.

According to reports, the explosion went off shortly after 8am outside a restaurant near the Ambassadeur Hotel on Moi Avenue.
Sources say the spot is usually busy with huge traffic as morning commuters change buses in the rush hour.

A a few metres from the restaurant is one of the key picking and dropping points for buses in the city.

‘Nation’ photojournalist William Oeri reported seeing at least two body parts at the scene and a ripped off leg hanging on a window.
“Personal items are strewn all over the place,” he said.

Kenyatta National and Nairobi Hospitals confirmed receiving 36 victims of the blast, six of them suffered serious injuries and were rushed to emergency surgery. Security teams rushed to the area and cordoned off the scene as others searched the debris for evidence.

According to witnesses, the blast was triggered by two men who had moments earlier attempted to get onto a bus but were turned away because it was full.

\"It was a very loud explosion. I thought it was a tyre burst but it was louder than that,\" Lang\'at Justice, a 20-year-old student who witnessed the explosion, told Reuters near the chaotic scene.

The scene of the new blast is only a few blocks away from the site of the former US Embassy which was targeted by suicide bombers in 1998. -Nation
