Kenya: New deaths over Kibaki re-election

Published on: 2008-01-10 00:43:12

(SomaliNet) At least two people were killed by Maasai tribesmen in the Kenyan town of Naivasha over the disputed re-election of President Mwai Kibaki, witnesses and police said Wednesday.

A middle-aged man was hacked to death in Naivasha\'s Moi Ndabi area on Tuesday night, police said, adding that several goats and sheep were also stolen in the incident.

The attackers were from a Maasai community supporting defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga while the victim was a member of Kibaki\'s Kikuyu tribe, according to witnesses.

\"They are still angry at us following the outcome of the general elections and have vowed to deal with us,\" said Martin Mwangi, a local resident.

On Monday, a man was speared to death in the same area in what the locals said was another case of post-election violence.

Naivasha police official Willy Lugusa confirmed the deaths and said reinforcements were beng deployed to prevent further violence.

Naivasha was less hit than other areas in western Kenya when the December 30 announcement of Kibaki\'s re-election unleashed a wave of deadly riots and tribal killings.

But rival tribes already at odds over land issues were nevertheless involved in several incidents, forcing dozens to flee their homes and find refuge at the Mai Mahiu church in the Naivasha area.

\"We can no longer stay in the area as Maasais are still burning houses and we fear for our lives,\" said Joel Kinuthia.-AFP
