Kenya: Gov’t to hire 6,000 teachers

(SomaliNet) The Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers’ Service Commission Gabriel Lengoiboni gas said Kenya\'s government will hire 6,000 teachers this week to replace those who have left the service or died.

Out of this figure, 4,000 teachers will go to primary schools while 2,000 teachers will go to secondary schools, Mr Lengoiboni said.

“The Commission will advertise details of the schools the teachers will be posted to in the press,” he said during a prize giving ceremony at Moi Forces Academy, Nairobi.

The TSC will also hire 6,000 graduates of teacher training colleges as interns to curb the shortage of teachers in public schools.

However, even after this recruitment, the country will still need 58,000 additional teachers to meet the prevailing shortage.

This year alone, at least 600 teachers have left service for other professions.

“The country still faces a shortage of teachers but the Government will address it as economic challenges ease,” he said.

During this year’s budget, Finance minister Amos Kimunya allocated Ksh1.56 billion for the recruitment of new teachers.

Mr Lengoiboni also took issue with the Kenya National Union of Teachers saying that the union was misleading teachers not to sign the performance contracts.
