Kenya\'s police most corrupt-report

Published on: 2008-07-21 03:53:45

(SomaliNet) According to a report by the Kenyan chapter of Transparency International, Kenya\'s police force has been ranked the country\'s most corrupt institution for the seventh consecutive year.

Kenya Police topped 26 local institutions surveyed, scoring 57 on an aggregate scale of zero to 100, said the watchdog\'s report released on Thursday last week.

\"Bribery in the public sector... is likely to further raise the cost of living through the imposition of illegal fees on the public,\" said Richard Leakey, the group\'s local chairperson.

Police spokesperson Eric Kiraithe rejected the report.

\"Having self-serving statistics to lay blame on the police is completely mistaken,\" Kiraithe said.
\"We regard that report as offensive to us and therefore not acceptable.\"

Several anti-graft laws have been enacted since President Mwai Kibaki came to power in 2002 but they have failed to stem the vice that nearly grounded the country\'s economy in the 1990s.

Kenya\'s two main corruption scandals - worth more than a billion dollars - are yet to be resolved despite pressure from the public and foreign donors, many of whom fund the country\'s development.-AFP
