Uganda: Woman delivers five babies normally

Published on: 2007-12-17 00:39:04

(SomaliNet) A Ugandan lady identified as Dorothy Namunana has delivered quintuplets.

Dr. Andrew Kintu said Namunana, 27, had a normal delivery giving birthto our baby girls and a boy at Jinja Hospital on Saturday morning.

She delivered her first child at 6:45am and it weighed 1.5kg. The second child came an hour later weighing 1.1kg, while the third one weighed 1.2kg.
The fourth baby weighed 1.5kg and the last baby was at 1kg.

“The babies and their mother are in good health, although the young ones are very hungry and we are devising ways of feeding them. The mother cannot readily breast feed them,” Kintu said.

He noted that the survival rate for quintuplets was high and they needed extra care.

Because the number of babies is big, the mother’s breast milk is not enough for all the infants, Dr. Kintu added.

Namunana said: “Am so shocked because I knew I was carrying a pregnancy of triplets and not quintuplets. I am grateful for what God has provided but we are very poor to raise all of them.”

Namunana was admitted at Jinja Hospital on December 1, after a scan performed at Kiira Clinic indicated that she was carrying triplets.

Sr. Dorothy Akurut, who handled Namunana before seeking help from doctors, including Kintu, said it was a complicated delivery.

“Her condition deteriorated considerably as her blood pressure shot up. After delivering the third child, she was not able to continue with the delivery.
“This prompted us to seek the alternative of vacuum extraction to complete the delivery,” said Akurut.

During pregnancy, Namunana said she felt as though she was carrying stones. “The belly was too heavy that I had to stop doing any domestic chore.”

Swalique Mudodo, Namunana’s husband, said: “I am finished! How can God do this to me? This is just too much. It is only a miracle that can save me this speedy fortune.”

Mudodo first refused to go to the hospital, but was later convinced by his brother. “I was happy on learning that my wife had given birth, but the shocking part of it was that I now have 12 children,” Mudodo said.

Mudodo’s first two wives had delivered seven children. Mudodo said his family had a history of twins. He added that he once had twins but they died in their infancy.-New Vision
