Uganda: Army kills eight Kenyan warriors

Published on: 2007-07-05 04:19:03

(SomaliNet) A Ugandan military spokesperson said on Wednesday that the Ugandan army killed eight Kenyan tribal warriors who allegedly crossed the border last week and staged an ambush.

Ugandan military spokesperson Felix Kulaiyje said warriors from Kenya\'s Pokot ethnic group ambushed an army patrol on the Ugandan side of the border and killed a soldier and wounded two others on Friday.

\"In the ensuing battle, the (Ugandan) soldiers put out of action eight of these warriors,\" Kulaiyje was quoted as saying by Kenya\'s independent NTV television.

Kenyan media, citing villagers living near the border, Wednesday said Ugandan soldiers had crossed the frontier and opened fire on a group of Pokot warriors, killing an unknown number of people.

But Kulaiyje rejected the claims and Kenyan officials were not available for comment.

\"No single shot or bomb was fired across the border (into Kenya),\" he said.

The Ugandan army is carrying out a drive in the country\'s restive northeastern region near the Kenyan frontier to disarm the belligerent Karamojong community, as the Pokot are known there.

In April, the UN human rights chief Louise Arbour urged Uganda to stop \"indiscriminate\" violence in Karamoja region where, killed least 69 civilians between November 2006 and March 2007. -AFP
