Italy: Over 800 illegal immigrants reach Italy

(SomaliNet) Over 800 illegal immigrants, most of them from Libya, managed to reach Italy on Tuesday in 11 boats.

Media reports said they landed in Sicily and Lampedusa, a small island lying to the south west of Sicily. Many of the immigrants were women and children. They have now been taken to immigration centres on the islands.

Every year, thousands of Africans attempt to reach Italy or Spain by boat. Many of them die en route, either by drowning or from exposure or thirst.-RNW
