(SomaliNet) Thailand\'s Supreme Court has sentenced former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to two years in prison in absentia. By the narrowest of margins, the nine judges ruled that Mr Thaksin had acted illegally by giving his wife the opportunity to obtain land belonging to the state.
The court did not find the former prime minister guilty of abuse of power, in which case he could have faced up to ten years behind bars.
The trial is only the first in a series of corruption cases against the former prime minister. He was ousted by the army in 2006 and now lives in Great Britain.-RNW
