Anyone in here got a J.D or pursuing one?

Post by FAH1223 »

I was talking to one of my adeers whos runs the non profit for the Somali community here in Maryland...

He was discouraging me from going for a Master's and told me instead to go for a J.D. His reasoning was that an MPP/MPA won't have you manage anything and used the example that all of the congress people who run shyt have J.D.s and he said if you want to do policy making, you MUST get a J.D. He has a Masters in Public Health from George Washington and he was making it seem like getting that M.S didn't do much for him.

Now, that idea sounds good. But I've always thought you get a J.D. to pass the bar, practice law, and pay off your six figure debt.

So I feel I'm at a cross roads sort of to speak. Most people and lawyers tell me not to dive right into a program until a couple years after graduation which makes a lot of sense.

I know there's a couple people in here who have J.D.s... I think Lord Diplock is one

Twisted_Logic put me on the MPA/MPP track and told me about the opportunities in it. Somalis just love to disrupt planned stuff, I was planning to send applications for Fall 2012 in the next couple months to enter a program

Faysal,

your adeer is high on Crack. You are a black man. You won't get high profile clients. Look at the lawyer at Straus kahn case and how he is abused.

Sxb Public Health Administration has a lot of opportunities. You would manage hospitals or any other oganization. Don't listen to JD B/s. Plus you are a muslim. It is haram to waste all your time studying man made shareeca instead of Islam.

Sxb you have better opportunity in degrees that you can work in corporate america.

You work for a firm that gets the clients. And Just a FYI, being a blackman makes getting clients easier because corporations have affirmative action requirements that demand a certain percentage of their legal work be done by minorities, thus forcing law firms to recruit URMs (under represented minorities) heavily . Get your facts straight before you spew nonsense.

Bro, I plan to take my Lsats october and apply in october too. I think having a JD would really be helpful in getting higher positions in policy field or any political/ governmental field you wish to get into. If you are tired of school then take a break, if not pursue it now. I plan to start law school 2012.

J.D... you would earn about $150 dollar per client in hennepin county public defender. That means you help 8 people in 3 hours== $150 * 8people===1200 a day... that is alot of money.

FAH,

It ultimately depends on what you want to do with your life. If you are thrilled by the legal system and if it's something that fascinates you then J D is the right field for you. However, if you like how the government works and so forth, the MPP/MPA is the right choice for you. Don't pay too much attention to what people say as their likes/dislikes is influenced by theirs own experiences and biases which varies from person to person. Overwhelming majority of government and UN jobs require MPA/MPP and real opportunities exist.

If you are not too sure as to what path to take, keep interning and discover more about yourself by volunteering and involving yourself in grass-roots activism and see what drives your passion. You are still too young and MASHALLAH have accomplished alot so far, relax, recollect yourself and plan ahead wisely no matter how long it takes you. There is no wisdom in rushing into a decision only to regret later.

Best of luck!

J.D offers Prestige but nothing else, There's is too many lawyers and the tuition cost is too high 250k plus. Google the supply v demand for lawyers. Consider law only if you can score 165+ on the LSAT and GPA over 3.7, then you can get option at top tier schools plus free ride.

That is what happens when you talk to too many people. You get different suggestions that are all subjective. If you are undergratuate, focus on getting the required general classes done first and delay a decision in making your major right now. Rovingmadness said it well and there is nothing I can add. Discover your passion and make a decision.

I am technically oriented, so my decision-making for a major in College was easy, I did something practical and hands on in science and use that today to work in my field. Thinking, analysis and knowledge are still required skills in what I do, but simpler than being a lawyer and a doctor for sure.

lol well TL says the most horrible things about Fah and even threatens him but apparently he is still proud of him and still gives him advice and Fah is somewhat scared of TL and probably sees him as unstable but still takes his advice. Brothers behave that way and it's weird to see it on SNet, in two people who I think have never even met.
