DEMOCRACY FOR SOMALIA???????????????????????
Democracy is the idea that the people of a nation govern themselves according to their needs by granting the power to decide on certain issues of their lives to an individual or an organisation as chosen by the majority of those allowed to vote.
This power is normally granted only for a specific term or a period, after which the process must be repeated again and so on.
In a democracy then , those in power are in reality workers and the citizens of that nation are then the work givers…THE BOSSES.
Just like any other organisation then ,the bosses.....citizens in this case, or the collective needs of all the citizens, decide the vacancies. For any job, naturally there are qualifications required of the applicants or candidates for our purposes .
These may include acquired knowledge or skills ,the ability to perform the job successfully and the firm commitment to the duties that the work entails.
So described, democracy is indistinguishable from aristocracy….which is rule by the most qualified.
The distinction lies in, in my opinion, the process of deciding. In a democracy it is the mob while in an aristocracy I think its …..the best…I don’t really know??????
In Somalia today , the need for a government -a power much stronger than all-is not perceived because the people don’t trust each other anymore. It even looks like the people would in fact fight to death willingly in order that such a power may not be realised.
Siad bare’s regime ,created divisions among Somalis so as to stay in power and we have not recovered from the mistrust that he created.
Government is then seen not as the protectors of those universal needs of justice and liberty and an equal opportunity for all ,but as an evil which must be avoided at all cost…even death…how sad!!!!
What now????
We now need to come to terms with ourselves ,forgive our brothers and sisters who trespassed on our rights and ask for forgiveness ourselves.
We need to stop spreading the evils of tribalism and see ourselves as a QARAN of one race ,one diin ,one language ,one culture and heritage and love one another just like we used to do.
We need to put our trust in ALLAH subxanahu watacala and stop EVIL on its tracks by not giving in, to it either by action or omission. Let our responsibility be only to our actions and words ---the definition of a Muslim.
And for evils done against us let us leave justice in the hands of ALLAH and our government . For us only polite objections for now without losing sight or zeal for THE RIGHT PATH…....AAAMIIN

Re: DEMOCRACY FOR SOMALIA???????????????????????
Is there's an African country where democracy has succeeded?
Re: DEMOCRACY FOR SOMALIA???????????????????????
No but i was only trying to show that democracy is really a process of chosing the leaders .It does not necessarily have to be the majority choise, but the majority choise if done fairly reduces the risk of failure a great deal, and is probably JUST since most people dont agree on what they vallue more rather than another, in my oppinion.
Re: DEMOCRACY FOR SOMALIA???????????????????????
Then, it's a failure, since there's no African country where democracy has succeeded.

Democracy is a relative term.
Somalis can't have democracy because to be democratic we would have to start listening to one another and why would we do that?

In order to have democracy in our world, we first need to deeply understand and promote property rights and individual rights and build institutions that ensures the effective functions of the system. Democracy comes after the fact, thus making our integration with the rest of the world easy.

Did it prevent America, the champion of democracy, from the abuses of Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, Bagram, etc?

How is that wareer when democracy only reffers to the process of chosing rulers by majority choise
The institutions and all the rest of it can also prosper in any system as long as rule of law ,transparency and accountability are practiced

democracy did not prevent abuses at abu garib because american democracy is designed to secure american interests and not foreign interests.

American democracy is a joke realy ,they might as well call it oligarchy.
I watched a documentary film about rupert murdock and how he literaly chose a former governer of new york. Both him and the former governer were interviewed and they both say how it was him who elected him by front page coverage and support

Re: DEMOCRACY FOR SOMALIA???????????????????????
Jamiila, the problem with the third world is the absence of property rights. "This is my land, house, farm and I have legal documents to prove that". In this quoted sentence, people in third world countries can hastily claim that this was their land or house, but they can't PROVE THAT THIS IS THEIR PROPERTY because no institution that protects and safeguards their rights exist. Individual rights also enforce human rights in the end. We probably have conventions or protocols for human rights protection, but no enforcement mechanism. We have to promote human rights as well.
In the end, when you have a Title deed for your property supported by major institutions with unlimited life, economically we can integrate easily with the advanced countries. Also, when you own property, your Voting Rights counts. You make sure that your voice and concerns are heard and responded to.
Mass Funding of the Education sector of African countries is also another to achieving Democracy.
