Harut (Arabic: هاروت)is one of two angels mentioned in the Qur'an, who were sent down to test the people at Babel. (Sura Al-Baqara, verse 102). He is accompanied by Marut.
There are numerous dubious tales that have been transmitted about these verses, yet they all center around the same basic story. To summarise the apocryphal story, some of the angels derided mankind, criticising them for the corruption of their rule. Allah said to them "If you were in their place you would be doing the same thing." (In another tradition is also reported that Allah said to them, "I have given them ten carnal desires, and it is through these that they disobey me.") Allah challenged the angels to do better if they are placed in the same conditions. They accepted the challenge, saying "O Lord, if you give us these carnal desires we would descend and judge with justice. "Harut and Marut were chosen and were sent to the city of Babylon. However, they soon fell victim to the same carnal desires experienced by man.
(It is told that when they realised what they had done, they tried to run but this was futile since Allah is all powerful. They were caught and then Allah gave them two choices. One was to stay in hell for eternity and the other was to be trapped in the world of humans till the Day of Judgement. Harut and Marut chose to stay in this world and it is told that they were trapped in a Bottomless Well from which they cannot escape, in which they reside to this day. It is said that if one wishes to learn sorcery and finds their well and askes them to teach, they will, however they will also warn the person (truthfully) that this will cause the person to become faithless or disbelievers, since learning magic amounts to disbelief.)
The strongest and most widely-accepted interpretation of this verse is that Harut and Marut did not deceive the people. It's true that they taught the people occult sciences they did not know, but they did warn their students about the temptation that comes with knowledge. They told prospective students that "we are but a test [for your faith]", that the practice of sorcery amounts to disbelief in God, and that they should therefore not learn sorcery. So when someone came forth of his own choice and decided not to heed the warning, it meant that he willingly chose disbelief. Later their teachings were used by subsequent generations of humans to practice black magic and sorcery.
